Great news!

I can't offer any advice on cleaning the area, but I'm so glad to hear he's being his happy self again.

hello--- i've been reading every post in this thread--- i'm so happy to hear that gus, et al. are feeling better! and i'm thankful that you all shared your experiences...

my cat figment came home from having PU surgery this afternoon and i'm afraid that i'm going to drive us both crazy long before he recovers. i really feel like i don't have a sense of how he should be acting or what i should be concerned about---i just called the vet and asked a bunch of questions and he very kindly told me i should try to calm down. which is good advice, but. it's not so easy to do. figment is an angelically sweet cat. i love him so much and i'm so afraid. and he's had a full week of hospital trauma. and i have no experience with sick animals. (i have two other cats who have always been absurdly healthy....)

figment is about 2 years old. i adopted him last august from a cat shelter---he had pretty bad ringworm then, and he was pitifully thin, but he's always seemed well and only started having [obvious] problems last week---but then those problems turned out to be horrible serious scary problems. he blocked twice and was so full of crud and so difficult to unblock/catheterize that his vet believed a PU surgery was the only good option for him. so. he had the surgery 2 days ago.

please pray for him / send him your good thoughts! you would love him if you knew him.

Ps prior to surgery he only ate kibble, even though wet was always available. I hate that i ever fed him dry to begin with, and i know transition will be tough.
i'm in the same situation and i feel guilty too. but we should probably be kinder to ourselves.

P.u. Surgery recovery is really really really hard! I have had at least three breakdowns, feeling lost and confused and of course horrible for my cat...BUT..... you can do this! Gus is almost ready to have e collar off and stiches out...2 weeks felt like 8999999 years! First, you know your cat, and yes now is tough, but trust your instincts. Second, be strong, do your best, figure out what works for you and figment. Like i turned plate over to get height so Gus could manage food better, although i did hand feed him a lot! I would say: if figment is eating wet, drinking at all (i used a small mason jar on towel, for height and weight because e collar kept knocking bowl over) peeing...all is well. Gus did not poo for days but finally did. It is exhausting! It is crazy making! It is very very very hard to go through, but, you love figment, you are devoted...that makes you the perfect care taker for figment! Watch out for dehydration...gus went back for hydration several times, read everything, and mainly TRUST yourself! You KNOW figment better than anyone, even vet. Reach out to anyone (vet) and everyone, like the truly kind and caring people here and believe it will all be ok. I thought i wouldn't be able to do this, and yet, here i am at the end of a long recovery with a happy (well, gus Hates the e collar) almost completely healthy cat. Sending you good thoughts, prayers for figment. Be well!

Gus has taken to wet food, which makes my guilt seem far away. Yes you are right, all we have is here and now. We live and learn and love out furry friends. Thank you.

thanks for your kind and encouraging words; i am so happy for you guys!! and also so happy to think that this will be all actually be over relatively soon...but it really is scary, isn't it? my first 24 hours were indeed a long 24 hours. i might be reading too much about the surgery/recovery process....i feel like i'm doing everything wrong (feeding figment, watering him, keeping him adequately contained, giving him medication, petting him, etc.) and so he will die a horrible painful death. though this afternoon i made myself go out for a couple of hours which made me feel saner, i guess.

figment is definitely disturbed by his e-collar. he hasn't been eating much---which of course i have been worrying about---but he has been eating and having both of his bathroom functions and today he is just really tired out i think. (buprenorphine!) (also the vet's office informs me that he likes his meat pate style! i must try harder to tempt him.) figment had a cystotomy (... :(  poor little guy...) and has to go back to get his catheter-tubing out on tuesday---it's reassuring to me that his surgeon will see him again so soon. like i don't have to be on my own TOO long. someone can check my work.

>^..^<

congratulations, gus! meow meow. talk to you soon.

Poor little Figment! It is so so hard when they are sick :(. The e collar is awful, no? Gus haaatttteeesss it,i hate it too, but better he wear it than have at his stitches! The fact Figment is eating and peeing and pooing is such postive news! I swear i have read absolutley every word on p.u.surgery and every post/thread i could find, until i literally thought my brain would explode! But i felt like it made me understand better what to expect, what was "normal", what to fear...when to hit the panic button. Remember too with confinment, maybe eating a little less would be normal, not burning as much. Getting a break is vital. I went for a drive and cried and cried and thought how i felt i was failing Gus, that it would be my fault...i was so overwhelmed. And exhausted, but a break helped re focus me. Gus is almost done with recovery, and soon Figment will be as well. I went back to the vet three times....i so feel what you are going through....in searching for answers i found this site, it has been a Godsend, saved my sanity. Plus, the advice is stellar. I get that seeing the surgeon soon is reassuring. You know, about day 11 i decided instead of using my "please live gus, i love you so much and i am so sad you are sick" voice, i decided, even if i didn't feel it,, that maybe if i gave off "you are gonna be fine" vibes he would somehow get that and feel reassured. I think maybe it helped. I sang my little Gus song to him, like normal times and petted him and cooed at him, but tried to keep what i felt hidden...which honestly was pure desperation....you hang in there. Clearly you have love for Figment. And the surgeons number. You can do this! If I could, anyone could....i tell people:they named chicken little after ME! (the sky is falling chicken little lol:wavey:) good thoughts going your way, Figment is in my thoughts and prayers...hang tough! Today is THE day, gus gets stitches removes under gentle anesthesia. Asked if there was any other way, nervous about him going under, but they say no. Please keep Gus in your good thoughts that all goes as planned. No matter how many times he needs to go to vet, each time i get very stressed out. He's been through so much. I am trying to stay positive and remember that when this is all done, he will be free of e collar, free to roam about house, just free. Thanks again to everyone for all your support. I feel like y'all saved my sanity and gave such good advice. :wavey:[emoji]128591[/emoji]:wavey::rub:

Am I ever glad I found this thread! And even happier that it is still very much active!

Well I would first like to say that I am very happy to hear all the success stories with the PU surgery, and although some of your fur-babies had a grueling recovery, ie. Gusmom, I am super happy that he is doing fine and the worst is over for you! I can't imagine how stressed and worried you would have been with all that happening after the surgery! Congrats Gus on making a full recovery - what a tough little guy!

My poor baby, Witty, is at the vets right now. His surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 11. He is only 6 years and has had four blockages already, the last two were back to back this week. It has been absolutely horrifying for everyone (family and Witty).  I am really hoping after this surgery he wont ever have to go through anything like this again.

I would love to keep you guys posted on how hes doing and use this thread for any questions/concerns I have for after surgery.  Its always nice hearing peoples personal stories and have a little personal support group going on through things like this.  I had never heard of the surgery until he blocked right after getting unblocked on Wednesday - then I did some serious research on other options to help this situation and was certain when we went back to the vet he would mention this PU surgery, and sure enough, he did.  Its such a scary situation to be in, I can't sleep, I am so worried for him.  Its great to know of so many successes though, easier to think long term and how much better his quality of life will be after the surgery and recovery period.

I will be back on tomorrow when the vet calls to let me know everything went okay with the surgery.  We will hopefully be picking him up Saturday afternoon.  I am super nervous for the recovery - I am a worry wart and will probably be asking a lot of questions as to whether 'this' or 'that' happened with your cat etc. Again, very thankful to have found this thread. You all seem like such an encouraging and supportive group!

Thank you Pushylady!

Wittys surgery went well! No complications during - he is still there now in recovery.  He is very uncomfortable and irritated (who wouldn't be after having two catheters and a surgery all done in a week :( ) However he has stood up a few times and peed on the vet tech (lol).  He has a bit of bleeding down there still (vet said should be expected from the surgery) but it is not hemorrhaging because it is not a constant bleed.  She said she cleaned the area and then rechecked and no more blood (so that's a good sign).  He will be spending the night there on a controlled fluid pump and I can call in the morning to see hows hes doing. If all is still well, I will be able to pick him up around noon and talk with the vet about the recovery process!

Fingers crossed he will be doing better tomorrow and I can take him home! I am in the process of setting up his recovery room! We bought the dog a new bed and put his old one in Wittys recovery room (the king size dog bed was pretty much my cats anyways lol always stealing it from my dog Bear).  His litter and food is in the laundry room so I am going to buy light coloured sheets/blankets specifically to lay down all over the room so I can monitor and see any urine/blood that may be seeping out when he is here!

Will update tomorrow when he is home :)

Hey guys!

We picked up Witty today and he is doing well so far! He has urinated 4 times since we got home around noon - he was super excited to be home, very vocal, cuddly, and actively walking around!  He still hasn't wanted to eat, but the vet said that it could be a side effect of the pain medication he is on (Buprenorphine).  I have been giving him a few pieces of pure bites (dehydrated chicken) soaked in water here and there, just to get something in his little belly and get a bit of moisture in him.  He will eat them no problems, so its a bit weird that hes not eating his wet food.  He didn't eat dinner tonight either so if he doesn't eat breakfast tomorrow than we are to skip the pain dose and see if he eats and then go from there (according to vet).  He has been sleeping for the past little while now - I suspect he can finally sleep in peace after spending almost a week at the vets.  I am hoping he will be eating tomorrow *fingers crossed*
