Hello everyone! I'm new to this site. Thank you everyone for sharing your stories. They have definitely helped guide me through my little guys PU surgery. I'm glad to read that despite all the obstacles, everyone's kitty is back to good health. My 6 yr old cat Tuna had PU surgery 2 days ago after 4 blockages and catheters in 1 week. He was released to me after 24 hrs. He peed a decent amount the night he came home. But I didn't notice him pee the nex day I took him back to vet last night at 4am. Surgeon was able to get him to pee by pushing on his bladder and told me Tuna was fine and bladder was pretty empty which means he's been urinating. Its 8pm now and I he hast urinated anymore. His new pee hole has a white mucousy film covering it now. Is this normal? Also he seems bloated and gasy. His poop leaks out from time to time. Has anyone else experienced this with their kitty? I do not know what to expect with this surgery and I don't know what normal healing is supposed to look like. This has been such an emotionally and physically draining week. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Just to update, it's been more than 18 months since my baby (well he's 6 now lol) Buddha got his PU surgery. He had four previous blockages so my vet decided the surgery was the best idea. I've been only feeding him wet food, part prescription and part high quality. He's been crystal free ever since! He pees softballs though, so cleaning the litter box every day three times a day is important. He's shown no signs of distress when peeing but he does tilt to the side a little bit lol. I think that's because it's still a little awkward for him.

But I just wanted to give comfort and courage to everyone with this situation! Make sure to only feed wet food with warm water mixed in, and you're golden! (And get water fountains and spread them throughout your home). Also make sure to give your cat lots of love especially right after the surgery. Buddha was always a clingy cat, but became inseparable to me right after the surgery. I think he was still afraid of the time at the vet and wanted mommy with him at all times!

I really don't know the answer to your questions, @tunatoonster. I'm not experienced in PU surgery, and am just here to offer my support to those who have gone through this with their kitty. I hope you were able to call the vet and get some answers. Sending lots of vibes for Tuna in his recovery...

Hi, I'm moving into this post as my cat theodore has just had the PU surgery. I'm terrified of the recovery stage. Right after we brought him home, he decided to go potty and he screamed bloody murder and started shaking really bad. We called the vet straight away who said that he might have tried to poop and it hurt. Stitches are still intact and he's not bleeding. We returned to the vet and he gave us some Cat-Lax as well as some meloxicam for the pain. The meloxicam worked fast and now the cat is much more relaxed and happy.

I have already taken a photo of the surgery site and I will share if people here want to see what it looks like :)

I'm so glad you didn't hesitate and took him to the vet right away. When cats actually verbalize their pain, that usually means they are in A LOT of pain.

Meloxicam is the generic name for the brand Metacam. Personally, I would ask for a different pain medication and not give the Metacam again. Metacam has been associated with severe side affects in cats such as acute kidney failure and death.

I just wanted to share a couple of pics of Theodore. He is doing remarkably well coming back to his cheeky self. I wanted to show the wound site and one of him being cheeky!
Aw, what a beautiful boy he is!  I'm so glad to hear he's doing well.

Since I really don't have experience in this kind of surgery, I don't know if that's how the surgery site is supposed to look or not. It looks sore and raw to me, but maybe that's how it's supposed to look.
Keep in close contact with your vet with anything that seems out of the ordinary.

That's just blood around the edges, hard to see in the photo but in person its clean and not swollen. We were told not to clean or touch it at all.

Hi Tunatoonster!

I went through this will my kitty a month ago, so the recovery process is very fresh for me. I know it is such a stressful time for your kitty and the family.  My guy had the mucousy film around the area too - that is normal. When he pees it should be washed away. The vet gave us some gauze and said we could clean his bum (since he cant clean himself) to prevent bacteria getting it his wound area and we could gently PAT around the wound area (this was about a week after his surgery so his wound wasn't fresh fresh - so not irritating).  My guys area was swollen for a few days but that eventually went down. The wound always looked clean (minus the bit of mucous here and there).  As for him leaking poo - did you switch his food at all? He could have some diarrhea that is coming out as he is trying to pee.

How is Tuna doing now? Is he peeing okay/more frequently?  He could have refrained from using the box at first because he was sore and only went when he absolutely had to. Keep us updated!!  If you have any more questions/concerns I will be more than happy to answer anything I can!

Hi Elise1030!

I am glad your kitty is doing better now!  The recovery process is definitely hard on you - but it is so worth it after the fact. Its been about a month since my kitty had the surgery, and about a week since he has been 100% himself again. He is running around cone free, sleeping in his favorite spots again, and back to his normal kitty self!

As I said to Tunatoonster, if you have any questions/concerns about anything to do with the recovery process, I will try and answer for you from my experience.

How is Theodore doing today!?

Quick update! Theodore is doing wonderfully awesome! He gets his stitches out in 2 days time. He is back to his goofy old self, trying to run around the house and chasing mice(they're coming into the house because it's near winter here
), playing with his best friend, getting underfoot and just generally being annoying in a lovable way he always was before he got sick. I am so, so glad we insisted on giving him this surgery! One thing we have noticed is that having multiple dishes of water around the house really has helped to increase his water intake. I guess he doesn't like walking too far to get a drink hehe!
Great news! I'm so glad to hear Theodore is doing well.

Another update, post 5 days after stitches were removed: He's been doing okay though I'm concerned he is still constipated( we have some cat-lax) and he still has visible blood in his urine. I'm wondering if this is normal for a time after such a traumatic surgery. Do some cats recover faster than others? The vet thinks it's normal and maybe I'm just pushing my panic button too quickly, but I am concerned.

If your vet says it's normal, then I would try not to worry too much about it. You're right that it is a traumatic surgery, and it will take time to fully heal. Just like humans, some cats will recover more quickly than others.
By the way, I love your avatar! :D

I need advice! Gus returned home after p.u. Surgery yesterday. At first he was very lovey and all seemed well. This morning he is not drinking, refusing to eat. When do i call the vet? Very worried. Thank you.
I have a cat that also just had this surgery. He seems his normal self except he is not eating and sometimes but not regularly drinking. He was at the Vets office since last Monday, 6/9. We brought him home yesterday, 6/18. He stayed so long because when they got in there to do the surgery they discovered that his urethra was torn in two places. Probably from another vet repeatedly trying to Cath him. He was healing fine and the vet went from a "50/50" chance to a "cautiously optimistic" chance. He was released into our care but isn't technically discharged yet. This was done on a trial basis to see if he would eat being at home. As of now, if he has eaten, it isn't much. He was in our laps and purring and happy last night. We put him in a spare bathroom with his cone on over night. I let him out this morning and took off the cone for a little bit before I had to go to work. Then put him back up. I have tried all different sorts of food, including lunch meat. Our other cat who is his brother and they had lived together for over 7 years, is growling and hissing at him so that can't be helping. I am ready to try baby food and egg whites. I just want to get his appetite back. I think that if he would start to eat and drink again, then he would continue to get better. I know that when they would force him at the vet he would get mad and eat a little. Any suggestions?

Why is the cat not eating? Pain? Infection? Is he on any medications? Did the vet mention an appetite stimulant?

He doesn't appear to be in any pain. The only medicine they sent home with us is Clavamox. When he was at they were giving him Valium to try to stimulate appetite. But it didn't seem to really help. He was on a lot more meds at the vet than what they sent us home with. I think they also injected him with antibiotics right before my husband brought him home. He just really doesn't seem interested in anything we offer him.
