Hello all please help

As my previous post on Princess I need to know if a cat can get infection after they have had extraction, prescribed antibiotics.

My cat had teeth extracted Aug 11 and was great 1 week later then 3 weeks later we have the problem of hiding not eating

does any one know if this  can happen

I read your other thread, and while it is certainly possible for an infection to develop after extractions, my understanding is that she was on antibiotics immediately after extractions and now is on them again, right? Unless it is a type of bacteria that is resistant to the Clavamox, it is unlikely to be an infection at this point. The hiding and not eating does certainly sound like something is still hurting her, but it's hard to know what it could be. Were x-rays ever taken of all of her teeth? You mention that a rotted one was only found during the procedure. I would think it would have been visible on an x-ray.

That is my question too.  When my RB kitty Chynna had  her dental I asked a ton of questions. The vet explained that a cat's teeth are such that most of the time you can't determine a rotten tooth from the surface, and that an xray of each tooth is needed in order to do that.  Chynna had many rotten teeth that seemingly looked good on the outside but were rotted under the gums and were causing her pain.

It is funny but at the beginning it was just the swollen gum above the eye tooth that caused us to extract that . It was while they were cleaning her teeth at the time of surgery they noticed the molar had also rotted from below the crown all the way to the pulp

the  vet said all roots were taken out but now i am not so sure as she is eating much better and is doing more of her regular stuff after just 3 days of antibiotics and metacam

Today is the last day I am giving metacam (I gave a low dose) and she will be on antibiotics until Monday

She has an Ultra sound of the stomach pancreas etc on Wednesday

I just feel it is bizarre that after the extraction she presented with pain /sick symptons 3 weeks later

she was great during the 2 weeks of antibiotics almost like a new cat

well the molar that was found rotted was when we went to extract the eye tooth and they were doing the cleaning  and I am not sure they took complete xrays of the full mouth

I am taking her for ultrasound Wednesday to ensure the blip in her stomach is nothing and also to check for tumors if any around pancreas etc .At that time I am going to ask them to check her mouth again .I have to put her under for this as she becomes absolutely terrified and subsequently feral when she goes to the VET

It takes 2 to hold her and last week she pooped her self while being held for the blood work

I do not wnat to stress her any more at all

I think some kitties have a hard time after dentals. The surgery, stress, side effects from the anesthesia and antibiotics, sore mouth, etc. can all be hard on the system. The medications alone can have bad side effects. I really think blood work would be helpful in determining what may be going on. You could try giving her Bach's Rescue Remedy for Pets just before the vet visit. It's not a miracle maker, but it might help her calm down a little.

My cat Sebastian had a bout of pancreatitis three weeks after his dental and his white blood count was sky high. He's still having issues. I can't prove that the dental caused it, but I do think the combined effect of anesthesia and antibiotics and stress have severely aggravated an underlying condition.

If your kitty goes 48 hours without eating, then she needs to be syringe-fed. Otherwise, she'll start to develop hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) which is fatal all on its own.

2 days before Xmas my 6 year old cat had his teeth pulled then 3 days later he stopped eating was drinking more than normal water and the gums are red I don't like this so of to the vets more pills and coiden for pain. One week later he has loss weight and back to the vet and he is still there I go each day twice to feed him. They ran a blood test and said his liver is infected???? But the vet said the gums look good and that's crap and 1800 dollars later. It's their fault all of this happen but who is paying for their mistake, my cat and me how does a person win

Okay.  I am really pissed off.

My kitty did not get an antibiotic after a tooth was pulled.  Within 4 weeks, she quit eating, showed signs of constipation (which was wrong) and was treated for such.

Then after an xray which showed an enlarged pancreas, the doctor didn't even think about it, instead, he wanted to give my cat more motility drug to get her to poop, but yet she lost almost 10 percent of her body weight!

I am such an idiot!  I did not even think of an infection due to no antibiotic not given to my kitty.

Eventually, the second treatment of enima, I demanded an xray which showed the the pancreas as previously stated.  It didn't even phase the doc, so I got a second opinion: she said, "it was a problem".  I spent an extra 230 to get a sonogram: spleen said she was bigger.  Masses were in the liver and stomach, however they said was cancerous. BUT WE RAN NOT TESTS TO PROVE IT WAS CANCER!   THEY ONLY GUESSED IT LOOKED LIKE>>>>>

So, the doctors condemned her to death......The "loving decision"......

Oh my God.  Could she have had merely an infection from the tooth extraction?  OMG!

I wondered how a dying kitty had a temp of 102, kidneys still functioning, just had no appetite...but she still loved her tuna and drank after being re-hydrated.....

And WE KILLED HER THINKING IT WAS OLD AGE!
