Aug 11th  Princess went in for tooth extraction she had 2 out one was found only during the procedure and it was rotted to the pulp, She came home and within a few days of metacam and antibiotics she was great. Eating loving doing every thing. One month later last thursday she went off he food .The Vet took blood work (good) and Xrays of the  stomach etc there was a tiny blip in the stomach but my thoughts is that this must have been there before.Off course now we are scheduled for ultra sound

I asked the vet if may be she got an abscess at one of the extraction sites and he said it was possible but hard to determine(i wonder if he got all the roots out?) so Saturday we started back on clavamox and metacam and there is an improvement . She is not hiding anymore and she is still drinking water well but still not eating as she used to. Vet said it would take approx 3 days to have teh clavamox kick in.

Any ideas i am really stressing out as she came in my life when i lost my son so it is like my child is sick.

Please help me

I'm so sorry you're going through this.  One thing you should do is assist feed her with a syringe.  She has to eat and you're going to have to help her.  You can get a syringe from the vet's office, the pharmacy, or a feed store.  Water down canned food, fill the syringe, and then gently shoot it in between the cheek and the gum.  Be careful she doesn't aspirate on it.  Also, ask the vet for an appetite stimulant.  Did the vet check her mouth for sores or ulcers or the possible abscess?

Maybe try offering her food more frequently in smaller portions will help increase what she eats.

Please be aware that Metacam is FDA labeled for one-time use only in cats. Repeated use has been linked to kidney damage. A safer pain med for cats is buprenex/buprenorphine.

I didn't think they still had boxes marked like that.  When it first came out it was for dogs and one time injection after surgery for cats.  They just came out with a black box warning for cats reinforcing the original use.  Metacam is an NSAID and a cats liver can't filter NSAIDS.  It's keeps circulating until the kidneys filter it out.  There have been cats that have went into acute renal failure from repeated use of Metacam.

Be very leery of using Metacam for an extended period of time.  Lots of people on this site can tell you stories about the ill effects of it.  I think vets prescribe it to make owners feel better, but there are other pain meds that are just as effective without the serious side effects of Metacam.

All of the things you've mentioned about her behavior are all positive signs!  Sounds like she's improving.  Yay!!  Please keep us posted on her progress.

Thank you so much .She came on her own last nite to eat and during the nite she must come down again to eat as i did leave out some food for her and the bowl was empty. she was on daddy all stretched out this am. she went this am to do poo then drank some water and had 1/4 of the small can of food at approx 7.00

then at approx 10.00am she had some more ,got her meds went to sleep woke up at 1.06pm and finished what was in the bowl more or less (1/4 can again) she is now sleeping

She had an Ultra sound scheduled for the stomach( xray showed a blip) for tomorrow but I have re scheduled as i really believe she had a n infection at the extraction site

I do not wnat to get her all stressed out again so soon as last Thursday she pooped herself when they tried to do the blood work

It takes 2 aides and the vet to hold her she is that strong and she becomes so nervous and hostile while she is there

i am hoping all these positive things are a good sign any way

This is the 2nd time since Aug 11 she is on Clavamox (first time was for the 2 extractions and she was so good after eating drinking walking cuddling 2 weeks later we are here again )

hello all princess went for her ultra sound and all came back very well. She had shown a great improvement last few days but guess what

remember i thought it was something to do with her mouth again well she had 3 teeth (1 tooth and 2 stumps) removed today This is only after I insisted that he vet look at her mouth again while she was under during the ultrasound

It is FORL and the vet said extraction so that is what we did .1200.00 later we are back on metacam and antibiotics (the 1200.00 was after 200.00 discount

Metacam for 3 days and antibiotic for 2 weeks

So now we know she passed her blood work her ultra sound showed nothing wrong with pancreas, bladder liver etc  so I was right it was all teeth

My husband finds it strange that they did not see these when they extarcted the canine and molar on Aug 11

What do you think

Oh and she ate really hungry when she came home this PM

So glad she is feeling better and that the ultra sound didn't show any issues internally.  I'm really surprised the FORL didn't show up in August when she had her dental.  Did they not do an xray then?   What were those two stumps about?  Did they leave those in August when she had two teeth removed?

Are you located somewhere in Eurupe?  I'm just wondering if that's why they keep giving you the Metacam?  What strength is it?  I know over there it's a lot lower than here, which is safer to use.  And that may be why the box specifically states for use in Felines.

Hopefully she'll be as good as new once she finishes her round of antibiotics and pain killers

Thank you for your Kind words Well that is the million $$ question we ask our self

I think they just did the Xray on the canine and the  molar in August. But I was really adamant  this time that they check all teeth while she was asleep

It is now almost 2 days today and she is eating really really well, looking through the windows etc.She wants to go out side but we will not until weekend

I will give the metacam only tonite and tomorrow and that is it

I asked the  vet about the clavamox as she is on it again for 2 weeks but they said fine if she is tolerating it with the food so we will continue

We are just relieved as it cost us 4000.00$ so far and she seems to be more alert etc

Actually the 1st evening Tuesday she came home and wanted food and ate really well

She is drinking as usual so we are happy for now

Ultra sound showed all is well. 2 blood works showed all is well so I was right it was her mouth

Thanks to all of you who helped me go through this I was a basket case
