I love my cat and her babies, but can't afford Vet trips and such. I want them to be happy but above all healthy. Someone told me I could go to Tractor Supply Company and get them there shots. And go to WalMart and get deworming meds for them. HELP. I want my babies to be healthy. But can't afford to take them to the vet. Any advice would be great.

About dewormers, in principe yes.  If you know which ones are good.  Depending also which one are there at Walmart.  Im sure some of them are no good. So you must know.

About vaccines.  People doing much rescuees work probably do learn the shortcurts. And some shelters.

I understand some few of our forumites do.  But for a "one cat + her litter" owners...

If you get guidance from someone knowleable, maybe.

The safe way is to raise the money in some way.

This is one of the reasons to pay and spay, so you dont need to give out money later on instead.

You have to go to a vet for rabies vaccine .  At least that is state law in most places.   I am pretty sure Tractor supply, Walmart etc. can't sell the rabies vaccine.  so you will need to make a vet appointment for that.

You could get the other things at  Tractor Supply .   They would have a 3 way combo vaccine for  panleukopenia ( called feline distemper or feline infectious enteritis) , Calicivirus and Rhinotracheitis (feline herpes virus)

Get some pyrantel pamoate dewormer in oral suspension   that is like the  Strongid T that the vets use.    It should be dosed by weight.   IF it is 50 mg/ ml suspension  , then the dose is 0.1 cc per pound of body weight.

but some vets just give half a cc to kittens under 5 pounds.

Here is a link from Amazon and the stuff lasts for 3 yrs.
You have to shake it before you draw it into a syringe to make sure the medicine is not settled at the bottom of the liquid.

The dose should be repeated again in 2 or 3 weeks.

But you seriously should try to find a way to get the cats and kittens fixed.    it's cheaper to do that than it is over time to buy more food and cat litter  for a bunch of extra cats... especially since they will just keep reproducing and it can get out of hand quickly!    If you're in the USA,   try contacting  Spay USA.   they have a hotline and can try to help you search for options for low cost spay & neuter.   http://www.spayusa.org/

I don't think Tractor Supply is really cheap for vaccines---they want $6.99 for one dose! I've seen them in catalogs for under a dollar a dose. But then there's shipping so maybe not much price difference for just a few cats. Cheaper than an office fee, I guess. They have an injectable and an intranasal vaccine, so do some research to see which one would work best for your cats.

Is there an old farm vet in the area? Mine does shots for $10 with no office fee, and gives Strongid for $1 a dose. Almost as cheap as going to TSC, and you get the benefit of the vet looking at the kitties, and you don't have to buy a whole bottle of de-wormer. But, yeah, if you have a lot of cats it would be worth it to just buy the bottle of pyrantel pamoate so you can de-worm them regularly. I don't think Walmart has a pyrantel-based de-wormer (all their brands have piperazine, which I've never found to be particularly effective) in the pet section, but maybe you could find it in the human section (for pinworms)---as long as it's pyrantel pamoate with no funny additives, it's the same stuff.

You CAN buy rabies vaccine in some states (it keeps everyone safer if the farm cats and dogs who never see vets are at least vaccinated), but it isn't legally recognized if a vet doesn't do it. So it depends on what you're going for---if you just want to protect the cats against rabies, you can do it yourself, but if you want to protect your cats from being put down in case of a bite incident, you need a vet to do it. Some feed stores/Lions Clubs/etc. will have low-cost rabies vaccine clinics, and have a vet sign off on the rabies certificates, so you can see if they ever do that in your area.

Thanks for correcting that about the rabies vaccine, Willowy.     I didn' t realize that in some states you can still legally buy it  if you're not a vet.   So FittensMomma can check on what the law is in her state / province .  The places where it is illegal to have it if you're not a vet  might have some special low cost rabies vaccine events like you mentioned.

Some low-cost spay/neuter clinics also do low cost vaccinations.

& yes ,  some old farm vets have MUCH cheaper prices than many small animal specialists especially in urban / suburban areas.
