I use stainless steel bowls for my cat, she is still a young cat she is not a year old. She was born in my backyard along with other kittens.. I keep her inside all the time.

My cat that has swollen lips needs dental work, but due to costs of a hyperthyroid cat cannot get her done yet, they say inflammation can cause this.  She eats out of only stainless steel bowls.  Many of you may have noticed they now put carageenan in all cat foods these days and i have to wonder if this is the culprit.

There is a brand called Weruva that sells some of their cat foods that say "carageenan free" but it is not cheap.  Once my cats teeth are done If I don't see improvement I will feed her this for 2 weeks if I can get her to eat it that is,  and see if there is a difference.  Carageenan is known to cause problems for  people with IBS (its in dairy products now) so I'm thinking maybe for cats too??  Worth a try for any of you not seeing any results in the changes you have made.  First is to try stainless steel bowls and get rid of plastic, and lead free ceramic for water.

They have slowly started adding carageenan to canned foods in the past couple years, maybe your food has changed some ingredients.  Have a look on the web for food recalls.

Long story. Few weeks ago Ms. Koli had diarrhea very bad, she was in her box for a longer period of time then normal and was very vocal. I checked the box when she finished, found a soft stool with bright red blood in it. Thought she was constipated which caused blood. Then a few days later found bright red blood in her food bowl, which I assumed she had vomited in her dish. Very concerned, took her to the vet, $400 later ....tests, xray, scan. Vet said she may have ibs as everything looked good, whew. Got home from work later that day and found her open food can was half red (bright blood red), for the life of me couldn't figure out how she could have thrown up in that can, which I had left on counter that morning. Left can undisturbed on counter as now i thought next morning i would bring can to vet so he could analyze vomit. Next morning food is completely red. So it was the food in her bowl that turned red and she wasn't vomiting after all. Relieved to know it was her food, dismayed to know it was her food. What do they put in that cat food. Never had discoloration of food before. And she always eats off of glass plates, no plastic. I took a pic of can/food but cannot figure out how to attach pic to this email. Well a few days pass and now she has a lower swollen lip just like the pics of your cats. I think it is the food. Not going back to vet unless she gets worse. She has a great appetite, loves that dam cat food although I have now taken her off it. I think something was wrong with that batch of food and she is having some type of reaction to it. Which in turn has caused her to have that swollen lower lip. Can't thank everybody enough for the pics and remarks, really put me at ease.
sorry I replied but it did not show up under your comment, I have to learn how this works.  I have noticed they are putting carageenan in canned foods now for the past year or two almost every brand has switched to this from guar guar gum.  Weruva brand sells some that say "carageenan free" you might want to try this for a week or so just in case it works, then you would know.  Also you can check websites to see food recalls.  That sounds odd, good you got her off that food.

change to glass and get rid of stainless and plastic.  my lucky has this complex and well lets just say it never really goes away.  i was successfully able to go 3 months without a shot a one time then it all went to heck in a hand basket. back to every 6 weeks for my guy.  They are able to identify him by his carrier before i get through the door at the vets office.  and it will rotate around the body.  one time mouth then hind legs paw pads and back.  try to use an all natural clumping litter as well brands like purina's clumping use too much clay and have other additives that can trigger outbreaks much more frequently and mostly in the paw pad area  we use sweat scoop and for over 1 year it has been working  am crossing my fingers though as it's getting to that time of year where the paw outbreaks happen.

My kitty, GC, is having a similar problem, I think. But I'm not exactly sure what could be causing it...

I don't think we've changed anything recently,

and it only seems to get worse when she's in heat.

She also rubs her face on everything like it's itchy, but idk what would cause it to be itchy.

I think she might have caught it with her wrist claw but my family say she just rubbed the hide off it.

I'm starting to get really worried for her since it's gotten way worse.

It's where it gets a white puss-like bumps every now and then but then fade after a bit just to come back.

Thinking about it, I think another possibility could be hormone changes due to heat cycles, but I'm not exactly sure about it.

Could this be an allergic reaction? The vets isn't open until Monday and it's only developed tonight but it seems to be getting worse, she's barely 8 months old and the only recent change is we got a different brand of litter last week,
She uses metal bowls and she's acting normally, doesn't even seem to bother her!
I've experienced the same bottom lip only Larger thought maybe a bee sting?? it went away in a few days no problem,  just watch it for now open wounds etc. if your cat gets a fever or anything...

I should also mention she's an indoor only cat

It looks like she may have a "rodent ulcer" (eosinophilic granuloma)

Hi, I have a cat that was getting rodent ulcers and found by putting water and white vinegar on a tissue and rubbing her chin/lip area it cleared up at once.  My cat seem sensitive to fleas even though I use monthly topical flea treatment.  Have tried 3 different types, but now moved to every 3 weeks.

Our cat had the saame thing on his lower lip. we took him to the vet to no avail. The vet said he had cat acne and it would go away. It didn't. That is when I found this wonderful cat site. By reading all of the  posts I came to the conclusion that he was simply allergic to plastic. We removed all the plastic bowls and replaced them wiyth stainless steel or glass. After only two days yyou could see an improvement. He is all well now and has not had any  further complications.  Good luck to you and your kitty.  sincerely, Jackson76

What's wrong with Beau's lip?? His lower lip looked thick last night and now it looks even worse! He's acting totally normal, but the lip looks gross. Is it an allergic reaction? He hasn't, to my knowledge, eaten anything out of the ordinary.

Hi. My cat Leo got a swollen lip too. I am scared of it. We'll go to the vet tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. I am so scared. I hope it's not gonna get worse. Now it's really little so its not seen in the photo. But if you look, you might see it. He's a Scottish Straight by the way. Anyone had the same thing? I think it's just the beginning of a rodent ulcer or something like that..

The first time this happened to Ruby I tried everything. Antibiotics, steroids, changing to all hypoallergenic food. I was already using all ceramic and stainless steel dishes, and she is an indoor cat.

Now, two months later, it's happening again, but this time, instead of being in the middle on the bottom lip, it's on the left side.

I don't know what else there is left to do. She's already on hypoallergenic food...

The ONLY thing that changed is that last night her regular dish broke, so I switched her to her other (backup) dish, but that's also porcelain, so I have no clue.....

Any thoughts?

My female cat Kissa developed a swollen lip this morning. And after reading this I think it's probably because I switched her food from fancy feast to blue buffalo. It was 3 days after the switch that she developed a swollen lip. I have switched back to her old brand and will update with any progress. If it doesn't get better in a day or 2 I'll take her to the vet

I have had my cat about 6 months from a shelter & though she's about 3 she's not much more than a kitten in nature at the moment.  I noticed a bad reaction to her vaccinations where she got considerable lumps around the needle sites. She did seem to get swollen lymph glands at this time too.   I later played with her using nylon string which she loved but I noticed she was getting swollen lips with slight abrasions visible so i stopped and the lips got better. I think any skin break is causing a overreaction. I have since noticed times where the corner of the mouth would swell up for two or three weeks then disappear to only reappear on the other side almost straight away with no actual sign of abrasion or soreness.  I'm thinking that something may be causing slight scratching or causing her to bite her lip and causing the reaction.   This might be chew sticks, dried food I give her or bony material in fish based food that are damaging the skin surface. I will try changing her bowls to ceramic ones though in case there is a plastic or nylon allergy issue as suggested by other contributors here. The shelter used ceramic bowls..  She's spent a considerable time in the shelter and may not have built up resistance to a normal environment. I'm not sure if a particular food is a cause as i change it all the time and she eats like a dog ie almost anything and tends to swallow without much attempt at chewing - chew sticks go down almost whole.

She has no fleas, does not chase mice or birds yet but does chase bees and eat moths which i can do little about. I'm hoping that when she grows older she'll be less fascinated by these.  I'm not worried too much about the lips as they don't seem painful and self heal but i did read somewhere that eventually these inflammations can translate to cancer and black cats like mine are more prone to this.

My other cat has no such problems but shared time with the other in the shelter..  It might pay owners to think about insurance.

Further to my earlier note, since several writers have mentioned rice allergy , i thought i would add that my cat gets rice based milk regularly as she loves and begs for it. .  I can't see this as a cause in her case as she has been getting this even when her lips are good.

My cat Peanut has that problem. The first thing I was told was to get rid of any plastic food bowls. Apparently cats with allergies have problems with something in the plastic. So if you use plastic I'd suggest switching his bowls right away. Helped Peanut a lot.

Interesting development I wanted to share with the cat group. Whitney vomited up a rubber band.
Now she ate that band last night as I know exactly where it came from.
In the AM she had eosinophilic granuloma complex on her chin and 8 hours after I saw the sore BARF !
I wonder if that was the cause? I wonder if the sore will go away now that the band is out or I still have to go to the vet on Thursday. hmmmm
