My cat gets to the string too.  I wouldn't worry - most likely she'll just pass it in her poo.  But if you see it hanging out of her but - don't pull it out. You could hurt or damage her insides by pulling it out.  It will pass on it's own.   If it doesn't or she isn't pooping, I would take her to the vet after 24 hours.  Sometimes a little pumpkin or vaseline helps move things along.

For now, please use the advice you'll see in this article

http://animal.discovery.com/pets/how-to-treat-a-cat-that-has-swallowed-thread-string-or-yarn.htm

Specifically:
Step 3: Give the cat one tablespoon of white petroleum jelly. Using a small amount each time, rub the jelly on the cat's mouth and paws. The cat will lick it off. Do not give the cat mineral oil.
This will coat the swallowed string and make it easier for it to pass through the digestive tract.

Vaseline on vet's advice saved a friend's dog from serious consequences, that's why I believe it might be worth trying this first.

As soon as you have a chance, please contact your regular vet, or, if necessary, an emergency vet for professional advice.

What is "white" petroleum jelly? Can I use regular petroleum jelly (vaseline)?

Yes, absolutely.  The label on the container should say Vaseline - 100% pure petroleum jelly - original.

Do not worry about that.  Vaseline can be a life saver in certain situations.  Coating swallowed material is one of them.

PS:

what mrblanche wrote in post #7 in the saying no to vaseline thread  applies here.

The problem with butter is that it is a fat completely digestible by cats; it doesn't make it to the parts that often need to be lubricated. You specifically need an indigestible oil.
Vegetable oils are also completely digestible.  In certain situations one simply must use an indigestible oil/fat to get the job done.
