We have tried multiple times to put a collar on our oldest, Nova and he scratches and rubs them until they are either in sheds or he gets them off. We haven't tried in a few months cause he was indoor only for a while but now that he, and our other two who have never had collars tried on, are going outside we want them to have collars in case they get out of the yard or front door.

Are their any particular types or brands of collars you like/trust more than others?

Any tricks as to keeping a cat from scratching/tugging at the collar?

Any particular material better than others? Leather, "rope", polyester, light chain?

Thank you!!

The problem with collars is that if they are going to be outside, then the breakaway collars are safer in case they get stuck somewhere. However, that means they are easily lost. If they are going to be outside at all or have a good chance of getting outside, they are better off microchipped (and spayed/neutered of course).

:yeah: Microchipping is advisable for both indoor cats and those that go outdoors.

We had the same problem with Mogli. He not only took off every breakaway collar we tried, he chewed them up. He's now wearing a Beastie Band, which is stretchy instead of breakaway and closes with Velcro. He seems much happier with it and leaves it on.

There are Swiss collars where you can adjust the resistance of the clasp according to the cat's weight, but I haven't seen them anywhere else: cat-life

Thank you for the advice! We are saving up for a microchipping, our vet does it for 65$ and we have three cats so thats very expensive all at once. We are hoping to have them microchipped within 2-3 months and just needed something in the meantime in case they got out. :)
