Hello as you can probably tell I am new here.

My -female- cat Roman is 1 and a half years old. She had her first accident outside of her litter box on Sunday evening and there was blood in her urine(although it was very little quantity of urine only a small puddle). I rushed her to the vet emergency clinic in the city and after a grueling night of waiting for her to eat and drink just so her bladder would fill up they were finally able to test her urine. They concluded that she has FLUTD with no indication of bacteria OR crystals. So they prescribed her some pain medication to give her every 8 hours and prescription wet food. After speaking with my actual vet he told me that she must have found crystals in her urine if she prescribed that food but it clearly states on her discharge papers that NO crystals were found. I do know that I need to switch to wet food I have come to terms with that but I feel like this prescription food for life is a nice way of lining the vet's pocket book. (Am I crazy here?)

So all of yesterday and today I have noticed improvement in her behavior. However this evening she has been visiting the litter box and every laundry basket/anything she can find very frequently to try and urinate and there still is significant red blood cells present in the 1 or 2 drops she is passing. Her latest dosage I missed most of the medication as she darted her head away from me at the last second. I feel that this is the biggest reason she is having problems at the present moment.

They did not run any further tests other than a comprehensive urinalysis. They told me that if she is not back to her regular self in 4 days that she will need to be brought in again and further testing done. My in town vet said they would look at giving her medication for mood balancing. My cat is not crazy. His exact words were she may be "a little off"

My parents have been doing a massive renovation the last 3 months and Roman and I move into their house in January I feel this is the cause as that is a lot of change for her. Also my schedule has been changing a lo recently as well going from a regular Monday to Friday job to going to school and working in the evenings so her feedings have been off by an hour or two difference.

If that's all not enough my parents have agreed to puppy sit my sisters new dog for the next 3 days starting tomorrow. What can I do to help Roman not feel even more sick during this weekend? I considered picking up some of that natural pheromone relaxant stuff and just keeping her in her part of the house where my room is, her litter box and her favorite chair etc. Will them meeting face to face be more stressful? Or will her being confined to the basement be more depressing and stressful. I'm  getting headaches the past two days worrying about all of this. I just want her to feel better.

Can anyone please give me some ideas, suggestions or their stories perhaps in dealing with this?

Thanks a lot,

Melissa

Hi and welcome to TCS. Sorry to hear about everything. If Roman has FLUTD with no bacteria and no crystals and her urine pH was normal, I don't see the point to the prescription food. Ask your vet EXACTLY why it would be helpful because prescription food is meant to lower urine pH to normal levels because crystals form in high urine pH. Urine pH should be listed on the urinalysis. Make sure to get a copy of it so you know exactly what the test showed.

Blood in the urine is a common sign of bladder inflammation. A very common herb used for bladder inflammation is corn silk which you might want to look into.

Stress is definitely known to be a factor especially in idiopathic cystitis cases like Roman's. It does sound like there are a lot of changes and stressors in her life right now. I would definitely try the Feliway pheromone diffuser. Whatever you can do to help reduce her stress would be good. I think confining her to your room while the puppy is there would be good IF that is a safe zone for her. I would make sure to spend a lot of time with her though while she is confined.

Thanks for your reply vball91

I will definitely be calling the vet's office tomorrow to get my hands on a copy of the urinalysis.

Fingers crossed that this weekend goes smoothly for her.
