I generally feed a kind of Prey Model Raw with a calcium supplement rather than bone-in meals. I balance the cats' meals with organ daily rather than over the course of a week as most PMR feeders do.

The meal fed at dinner time is the meal with organ. So they have the meat portion they get at the other meals reduced to account for the organ. For instance, Billy eats 1.2 ounces of food per meal. I feed three meals a day, so he gets a total of 3.6 ounces of food a day. At the organ meal, he gets 0.8 ounces of meat, 0.2 (I round) ounces of liver, and 0.2 ounces of kidney. Roughly. I err to too much rather than too little. ;)

I use chicken liver and beef kidney as the organs (for the most part). I follow the 80% meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, 5% other secreting organ guidelines - without the bone. Rather than split the difference, I just bump the meat portion to 90%.

I also provide one egg yolk per cat weekly, and I split one 4+ ounce tin of sardines (water, no salt) between them weekly.

I have three cats that eat what they're supposed to: Billy, Chumley, and Ming Loy.

Flowerbelle will NOT eat kidney, no matter how I offer it to her or with whatever on top of it. But she loves fresh liver. So her 5% "other secreting organ" is liver. :lol3:

Tuxedo will no longer eat liver, no matter how I offer it to him. (This is because he doesn't like it and has trouble keeping it down. He used to eat it with freeze dried chicken powdered on top of it, but as he's not kept it down, I guess he's smart enough to have decided not to eat it any more. :dk: ). He likes and can keep down freeze dried liver, so he gets a 5% fresh equivalent of freeze dried liver. He also LOVES fresh kidney, so I give him extra beyond his 5%.

Sheldon cannot keep down any organs, but hates kidney anyway. He gets his organs as freeze dried (chicken) liver (he can't keep down freeze dried beef liver) in an amount that is equivalent to 10% fresh liver.

Lazlo doesn't eat any organs. So I use a supplement that makes just meat complete. He eats Call of the Wild as that supplement.

Spooky won't eat any organs. She hates CoTW. We just tried TCfeline, and she wouldn't even go near her dish - despite HEAPS of the fallback topper, FortiFlora. :lol3: So Spooky gets a cod liver oil supplement daily, to ensure she gets her vitamin A.

All of them get a homemade supplement added to their morning meal: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/264199/homemade-supplement-for-raw

So with that long preamble, here's the organ meal process.

Just the meat, portioned. As you can see, they all eat different sizes. Billy gets his meat in one lump. Shel usually gets his in 2 or 3 strips, but this pork was falling apart. :lol3: (I normally use chicken thigh or gizzard for the organ meal, but forgot to thaw any. :anon: ). Spooky won't eat it unless it is basically minced. Chumley usually gets his meat in two pieces, but he just recently had a canine removed, so I'm cutting up his meat into more bite-sized pieces for now.

I no longer weigh out the organ individually. I bag up and freeze the amount needed for the cats that eat it, and just eyeball it when cutting it into the dishes. Once a month or so I weigh it as I put the meals out, just to get myself back on track with correct portions.

Meal with kidney added to those who eat it:

Meal with kidney and now liver added to those who eat it:

Because no one is in love with salmon oil, I measured out how many drops I get out of one capsule. I use 1,000mg capsules. I divided the number of drops they need to get 500mg daily by three, and put that many drops on their meal. Flowerbelle doesn't get salmon oil; I just pill her with krill oil in the morning. But here's the meal with salmon oil and eggshell powder (and CoTW on Lazlo's)

...we're not quite done yet. Tuxedo and Shel get freeze dried liver rather than fresh liver:

With the cutting and measuring, it takes about 10 minutes to prep the meals for the 8 cats.

...and on that note, I'm a little late for their late night meal. :lol3: They're getting the chicken thigh they normally would have had earlier. ;)

This is so awesome - I made The Boyfriend look at this. Maybe NOW he'll stop bellyaching about trying to manage TWO cats and he'll finally realize how easy we have it.

I finally got him to admit the whole grinding bone thing is a macho man activity that I simply dread and can't get excited about.  He is thrilled we have a rabbit thawing for BONE GRINDING TOMORROW!

That's nice dear....

As long as he wants to turn that grinder crank I guess...

This is so helpful Laurie because I often feel like it shouldn't be taking what feels like forever to dish out a PMR meal, but reading this makes me realize I am not the only one portioning out in such a way.

Jennie and Queen Eva are both handling nice sized chunks. Mazy's has to be minced or it comes right back up. I've given up trying to ever feed her chunks.

Spooky simply won't eat it if it's minced. I don't know what changed, as she used to eat anything. But after the first time she got constipated once we started raw, she's become very particular about what she will and won't eat - and how. :lol3:

Lazlo and Tuxie simply won't eat some chunks if they're too big. So they basically get bite-sized pieces. Ming Loy drags anything larger than bite sized pieces all over the place, so she gets bite sized pieces. :lol3:

That said, Tuxedo will eat the bone-in meals, which I put in the dishes in 2 or 3 large pieces. :dk: Lazlo, Spooky and Flowerbelle won't eat bone-in meals.

Flowerbelle doesn't chew well. I had that one choking incident with her with the duck heart. Because of that, I don't give her anything bigger than she can swallow without chewing.

It does take longer than splopping out canned food. But given how long it USED to take me to get their meals ready, I don't mind it takes me longer to fix their meals than it takes the cats to eat them. :lol3:

SUPER helpful!  I've been researching frankenprey for the past few hours - it looks like a better fit for Fox and me if I can get him to eat it.  The frankenprey also seems to be much cheaper than the catinfo.org recipe. In fact, the way I've got it priced out, it's about the same amount I spend on Friskies!  Is there a meat or an organ that I should feed Fox first?  He likes sauces a lot (the gravy from the canned food is his favorite) and does not like pate'.  I haven't tried a probiotic yet - he hasn't needed one to entice him to eat.  I need to read up on introductions to raw food too!

Also, has anyone had any experience with mypetcarnivore.com?  It sells hearts, kidneys, liver, etc. and the prices look reasonable.

You can start with any meat you like, if you eat a fair amount of meat just chop off a hunk while it's raw and offer it chopped up.  Make sure it's not seasoned or enhanced with extra sodium though.  It really depends on the cat what they like and whether they will take to meat right off the bat or not.  My cat was on canned and I just started giving her the same raw my ferrets ate to see what she would eat and while she's picky and outright refused some meats she chowed right down on others.  However seems like a lot of cats need more convincing than that.  I have not ordered from MPC but know a lot of people who do, I get some meat from haretoday.com and have been happy with them for several years.

:yeah: Just slice off a small bit of whatever you're making for yourself, toss it over your shoulder as if it slipped out of your fingers accidentally, and see if he gobbles it up. :lol3:

http://www.hare-today.com has lower shipping prices than MyPetCarnivore. HT has a much larger variety too. You're in NY... I'm in NJ. The cost of shipping is INCREDIBLY reasonable for HT. Of course, I buy a basically full box (50 pounds). But even when I've only ordered 35 pounds of stuff, it really only adds about $0.50 per pound to the cost of shipping. HT has the most reasonable shipping prices of pretty much all options.

So I made a spreadsheet of HT and MPC prices.  Looks like MPC is cheaper per unit, is more expensive for shipping, and has a smaller selection.  BUT, I'm originally from Michigan and have plans to visit my family over Thanksgiving.  MPC is based in Michigan and has a delivery service - for $10, they will meet you at select locations on select dates.  My plan now is to order at least three months worth of frankenprey.  Hopefully by late November Fox will be loving the raw!  Thanks for your help everyone!

Oh yeah, if you live in their area, MPC is great. That sounds like a good plan! ...and even if he's not completely transitioned by the end of November, the food is frozen and will last quite some time. :)

Oh - and for context, this is their diet:

The supplement is now added to each meal (1/64th teaspoon per ounce fed). They also get the gelatin and eggshell sprinkled on. And probiotics in the AM and PM.

OH! Yes - I also include digestive enzymes on each meal now.

The ground food is in there so I can hide their 1/4 egg yolk in it (so they get one egg yolk a week, minimum). I also like they get the ground bone, and whole animal. :)

I substitute beef when I can't afford the venison, and I'm using the whole ground rabbit, fur and all, from HT now.
