I have a recliner that I was cleaning under. I reclined it and lifted the foot rest to clean out all of the debris that gets trapped in there. I then pushed the foot rest back down and put the chair back in upright position. I started sweeping the rest of the room, and after several minutes, I heard a faint, muffled little meow. I realized that I had not seen my 6 month old kitten since I started cleaning out from under the chair. I immediately panicked and went over to lift the foot rest, and sure enough, he came running out of the chair. I feel really stupid for not checking to see where he was before I put the chair down. There was no sound from the kitten and there was no resistance from the chair when I had closed it up. He is also big for his age so I am baffled as to how this could have happened. I had raised the chair up and let it down a couple of times to shake out any loose debris after I had closed it up also, with him apparently still inside the chair. I feel awful, imagining him banging around in there. My kitten seems fine and does not appear to be injured, but I am worried that he could have been injured internally. Maybe I am overreacting, but I wonder if I should have him checked out by the vet. I am worrying and obsessing over this since it happened two hours ago. What do you think I should do? He is eating, drinking, and playing like normal, but what if some injuries show up later? I know that cats are good at hiding pain. Any advice would be appreciated.

It's hard to know what type of space he was in... were there any hard bits that could have pushed into him?

Really, he sounds fine to me.. cats can squeeze into extremely small spaces... If he's eating, drinking and playing normally it sounds fine.  Something like concussion or brain injury can creep up gradually, but it's difficult to imagine that happening in this situation.

Just keep an eye on him.

Yes, I agree to keep an eye on him, and make note of any abnormal behavior.

In the future, please be mindful of a reclining chair with kittens in the house, not only with you and your family in the house, but also with neighbors and friends who are visiting. Unfortunately, not to long ago I heard of a kitten who's neck got broken by a reclining chair. So awful.

OH those recliners can be so dangerous to cats and especially kittens. We have one in our house too and the cats love to lay on the foot rest under the chair. We learned to always check before extending the foot rest or putting it back down. It sounds like your kitten was very lucky and is not hurt! That is good news and I think he will be just fine and would watch him for any off signs for a day or so. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
