What do you do with the egg whites?

I hate wasting the egg whites when the cats get their yolks. Since I am in need of high protein breakfast (for me) foods that don't contain dairy I wondered if I could poach up the whites and eat those. Or would it be gross? I am not normally a fan of egg white but maybe I could get used to it, in the interest of good nutrition for myself, and reduction of food waste.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Not a breakfast food, but you could make angel cake. Or add the whites to their food.

Oooo, lots of deserts out there! :lol3:

This one has frittatas: http://frugalliving.about.com/od/utilizingleftovers/a/Uses-For-Leftover-Egg-Whites.htm

This has a really long list with some VERY interesting options: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...er-egg-whites/2012/02/01/gIQArrQXkQ_blog.html

Apparently they can be frozen? Or even stored in the fridge for a while.

Let us know what you decided to make!

Thanks for the imaginative replies, but I want to know what you all do, specifically.

I don't fancy storing raw egg white in the fridge for any length of time to get enough to make a cake. I have no freezer space. I don't want to make cakes anyway, because I will just eat them.

I just want to find some use for a single egg white twice a week, and two on Sunday. Something easy that does not involve a lot of work, food prep or dish washing. :lol3: Today I poached the two, and will attempt to eat the result for breakfast tomorrow on a couple of whole wheat triscuit crackers..

If that works for me, I guess that is what I will continue to do.

Saving it for supper and making an omelet might be an idea, thanks for that idea Draco! Or I could even make the omelet at night and save ift for the next day's lunch.

But aside from your ideas offered, what do all of you actually DO with the whites, when you feed the yolks?

Not a breakfast food, but you could make angel cake. Or add the whites to their food.
I guess I could see if they would eat the cooked whites......I won't feed raw whites to cats. Knowing if they will eat cooked whites might come in handy if any of them ever end up with CKD I suppose.

Laurie, thanks for the links. They all look like very yummy ideas. I don't want to make sweet things, though. Sugar is a drug I am trying to stay away from. :)

I personally would cook them into a rice dish of some sort.    I do rice and eggs(yolks, whites or both) alone all the time but a few veggies would be better for most people:p

I can't picture what you mean? Can you explain in more detail? I eat a lot of rice, that might be something that would work for me, if the plain poached whites for breakfast don't go over well.

I add just the whites to  Tinky's ground turkey mix, since I feel it's too high in ground bones.  I'm hoping the protein in the whites counteracts the calcium in the excess of bones in the turkey grind I get for him, since it's about 18% bone.

I used to add them to Callie's canned food to give her extra protein and try to get her to gain weight, but she has become even pickier than before (if that's even possible)  and now rejects any food that has anything added, including probiotics, digestive enzymes, krill oil, etc.  So...
    Ooops,  sorry, I digressed again
(BUT,you might try that with Queen Eva!  You can pop them in the microwave for between 15-30 seconds and the cook right up, then blend them with her canned food and see if she'll eat 'em.  I actually blended them I my Magic Bullet so they became smooth with the canned food)

No microwave here, but it doesn't take long to poach the whites. I'm going to get an egg poacher cup though, because it sure makes a mess of the pot.

Queen Eva is very suspicious of anything in her dish, even food she eats and loves. If anyone will eat the whites, it will be Jennie.

Mazy is picky too, but with her constant digestive issues, do you think cooked whites might help, or will they make things worse?

Really I want to stretch my own food budget mostly, and eat them myself. :lol3: But giving some to them, if they will eat them is a good idea for an extra boost of protein.

Well, there were some recipes that weren't sweets. :lol3:

What catsallaround means is a dish like fried rice, I believe. Make rice, then fry it up with the egg whites and veggies.

I usually just throw them away. I do put some outside for the ferals, but I typically use 12 to 24 at a time, and I'm not organized enough to freeze them and dethaw smaller quantities for the ferals. We get plenty of protein, and need the choline in the yolks ourselves, so when we eat eggs, we eat the whole egg.

Thanks Laurie! That fried rice idea sounds yummy. A good cheap way to get protein with a rice meal. Got to stretch my food budget now that I am not doing work where I can work as much as I want to, to make more income when I need it. Working a regular 40 hours a week job, I don't intend to take on any extra work, so the budget is in for a big overhaul once I know what my paycheck is going to be.

I eat whole eggs too, usually two or three a week.

Eggs are cheap especially when I can get them on sale for 18 at $1.88.

I guess I didn't look down far enough, all I saw were ideas for sweets. They all look yummy, but I try to stay away from sugar.

I don't have my cats on a yolk schedule.. Whenever I make something with eggs, I give them the yolks then so I won't have to waste the whites. At this point, the cats get excited whenever I crack eggs!

I also hate wasting things, so I've just been cooking and then adding the whites to my smoothies. Though it's only one egg white a week.

And wow that is really cheap. Cheapest eggs here would be around $4.50 for 12. Though I generally buy organic free range, which is more.

Yup that is what I meant.  I usually make rice put it in container when done and then saute some veggies(peppers onions are my favorite but many options) then add in some rice and the eggs so the rice binds up a bit as opposed to just egg bits.  It is one of those dishes were it is not a strict recipe but a oh I have this on hand lets fry it up.

I used to just eat the egg whites boiled (or poached if you are cracking before cooking) with some salt and pepper. I've never given them to cats, but I used to boil eggs and give the yolks to my daughter before she started eating the whole egg.

I just throw mine away. Wasting eggs is something that just happens in my house, and now that I can at least give the yolks to my cat, I'm wasting less. I hate eggs -- they make me nauseous if I can taste them, so I only have them around for baking (and now, the cat). Even with a six-pack, I rarely need all 6, and therefore, used to end up tossing them all when they got bad. I wish I could buy them singly, to be honest.

Guess what!? The egg whites, even cold, were good for breakfast! I just put them on a couple of triscuit crackers, and, along with my spoonful of organic peanut butter and 6 ounces of orange juice it was a delicious high protein low carb, low cholesterol, low sugar, fast to make and easy to eat, breakfast! And no more throwing egg whites away!
