I'm worried about Spazz. I've told the vet for the last year that he throws up all the time. The vet didn't seem very concerned since, at that time, my kitty hadn't lost weight. She put him on a hairball formula cat food. He's been on special diets, too.   I'm not even counting the occasional hair ball since that's pretty common. In the last 18 hours he's thrown up EIGHT times. I took his food,  cleaned his water bowl and filled it, but I'm worried about him. I don't have hundreds of dollars to go to a vet since I live on disability. Do you have ANY suggestions for me at all? He's listless and his nose is dry and cool. Should I give him weak chicken broth so he will drink more? I don't know what to do to help him!

What a beautiful cat! Welcome to TCS.

There are so many reasons a cat might throw up. We need more information before we can start making any suggestions.
What does it look like when he throws up? Undigested food? Partially digested food? Green or yellow liquid? Foam?
Does he throw up immediately after he eats, several hours after he eats, at random times?
Is he still eating normally or has his appetite decreased?
What are you feeding him? (Be specific: wet or dry, brand name, flavors)

Yes, Spazz IS a beautiful cat! And welcome. We do, as Goldy posted above, need some more information and answers to those questions. I would add that it very well could be a "hairball" blockage of some sort and that Spazz has been having trouble passing all of that hair. I used to have a long haired black and white cat whom I ended up shaving every Spring in the lion cut to help with her hairball problem and it worked!!! Are you brushing daily? That will really help if it is a hairball problem. There are also certain supplements you can give your cat, again, IF it is a hairball issue. It could also be a diet related problem, an intolerance to a certain ingredient in the food you are feeding. But we need to know what you are feeding, when he throws up (i.e. right after eating, etc.), and the consistency of the vomit. :vibes::vibes:

What are flavors of food is he eating?  Do you rotate flavors?  I had a kitty who threw up every time we fed her wet food with fish in it.  It took us about a year to make the connection.  Also, how's the pooping?  Do you notice hard stools or constipation?

I used to feed him Taste of the Wild dry and canned food. Then we tried a special formula (dry and wet) from the vet for sensitive stomachs. He's been on Iams hairball dry. Now I have him on Blue dry food.

He throws up undigested food. Sometimes he doesn't make it out of the kitchen before he throws up. Last night he woke me at 3 am throwing up. A week ago he threw up EIGHT times in an 18 hour period, and it was yellow liquid.

He does throw up hairballs, but those don't worry me. I do brush him every day. He sees his comb and will follow me to whatever room I'm on my way to. He loves to be brushed.

He has done better with the Blue brand of cat food. He does not do as well on wet food as dry. Wet food comes right back up almost every time I give it to him, and I only give him about a tablespoon at a time.

I've tried small feedings several times a day, different cat food brands, different wet brands of food, boiled chicken with rice. I don't know what else to try!

The vet said it could take thousands of dollars to find out what's up with him. I was willing to spend the money to try to find out what is up with him, but the vet discouraged me. She said try him on hairball formula food for a couple of months. Blue for indoor cats does have hairball control, too.

I'm at a loss as to what to do!

Any suggestions would be appreciated. If you know of a good CAT vet in the Huntington, WV area, I'll take him there.

I wash his bowls every morning and rinse them well before I feed him

This all started about 2 years ago. Before that, he was fine on Taste of the Wild.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Oops, I missed some questions.

His poop is normal. He pees and uses his litterbox just like he always has.

His nose is cool and moist now, too.

I don't give him different flavors of cat food. The brand I now  use is Blue for indoor cats.

He gets no table food at all unless it's Thanksgiving when I let him have some turkey. He LOVES turkey!

He gets 6 treats a day... 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening. He does tricks for them! lol

This morning when he threw up the fist time, it was undigested kibbles.

Later this morning the threw up a hairball, but like I said, I'm not worried about hairballs.

Thanks :)

Oh, and he's almost 8 years old. I have no house plants that he could be getting in to either.

I think I've covered all the questions :)

Were you having these problems when he was on TOTW?  If not, I'd switch him back to that.  Also, if you don't gradually change dry foods, it could lead to vomiting.  Does he eat very quickly?  He could be a scarf & barfer.  I had one of those.

Vomiting, even hairball related vomiting, is not normal in cats. The below are links written by vets that explain why. It really sounds like food allergies/possibly IBD to me. Both of these are unfortunately very hard to diagnose. A limited ingredient diet or raw has been known to help cats with food allergies/IBD.

While there an be an array of reasons for the vomiting, I think the first thing I would do is put Spazz on a novel protein, grain-free food. Nature's Variety Instinct has several Limited Ingredient Diet (LID) foods currently available....Turkey, Rabbit, Duck and Lamb (I have seen the Lamb in wet form only.) I would try the Rabbit or Duck formulas.

Have you tried adding Pepsid? Could be reflux/indigestion.

What about checking for a cobalamin (B12) deficiency?
