Be careful of buying on Ebay. I have heard of counterfeit and stolen flea meds. However, if the seller is an established account and has good feedback, it should be safe.

Oh I am experienced buyer and seller on ebay but I know what you are saying just make sure they have a good ebay rating and you should be okay. That is mostly a problem when buying from other countries.

I might as well chime in here with my experience over the last 50 years or so. Dawn dish detergent is great for drowning the fleas, but they usually come back quickly. Fleas use the litter box and cat's digestive system as part of their life cycle, so it is necessary to break the breeding cycle to truly get rid of them.

The nicotine based pills are considered "Knock Down" treatments...they kill the adult and young fleas very quickly and effectivly. The main disadvantage is that the treatments only last for a day or two. This makes it necessary to use other products to eliminate the total problem. The nicotine pills are called Capstar and are deadly to fleas but very safe for animals. After taking a Capstar, within 30 minutes your cat will probably start scratching like crazy...this is because all of the fleas are twitching and abandoning ship (or cat!). This isn't pleasant for the cat, but it is itching caused by the fleas and not the medicine...it usually subsides within an hour and you will have a surprisingly large pile of dead fleas surrounding your cat. With the adult fleas gone, the eggs are left to deal with.

Revolution covers all of the bases regarding fleas and their life cycle. My vet who has been in practice for nearly 50 years recommends it and indicated that he has had very few, if any, reactions to Revolution. Frontline works well for fleas but doesn't offer as much blanket protection as Revolution and has caused a few more reactions. Both seem to work well in general.

I have tried many different homebrew flea treatments over the years but have never found one that works well. Diatomaceous earth is usually a good natural insecticide but can sometimes cause breathing issues in cats that have underlying health issues or lung problems. Any attempts to treating fleas with Lemons, Vinegar, or other kitchen items has usually resulted in an upset cat that smells like a salad bar! I don't like to admit it, but the only products that work well and consistently are the commercially available preparations. Many of the items that require a vet's prescription are available in Canada over the counter...as well as on Ebay thru Canadian pharmacies. This is a gray area of the law but doesn't seem to be a problem as long as a legit business is chosen,

There you have it. Like I said earlier, my opinion is only my opinion. I hope this helps someone but please don't quote this as being gospel...I'm well versed at making mistakes!

just use a regular pipette of treatment for the big cat
Welcome to TCS, @knoeldevries.

I don't know if you are using the desktop site or the mobile site. But, the OP started the thread two years ago.  The OP was looking for a way that didn't involve traditional flea treatment. Therefore, using the pipette is not on the agenda.

I, personally, use the Advantage Multi if I need to kill fleas. I have not had to use anything on The Ladies in several years. They don't go outside, except on the screened-in back porch.
