My cat had bladder stones out 9 days ago. He got out the stitches and is drinking water . He had to have some fluids today and Nutracal. They gave him Cyproheptadibne to stimulate his appetite. Does this usually work? How long till it works? Just need some answers and to be reassured, just concerned for him.

I guess your cat is not eating? How long has it been since he last ate?

A cat needs to eat to help give him/her nutrition to heal and to avoid any other complications, such as hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver), which can start to develop within 48 hours of anorexia. Appetite stimulants can be really helpful in getting cats to eat who are feeling under the weather. I have not used the Cypro type, but others on here have with success.  It's important that your cat eats.

I've not used either, but heard the Cypro works well.  Of course, either can have some unexpected side effects.  It just depends on the cat.  I read it might take up to 24 hours for the Cypro to take full effect.  You have to give it to him once daily, right?  And if it doesn't work, or has bad side effects, then you have Mirtazapine to fall back on.

My vet always seems to lean towards the smallest needed dose of Mirtazapine because its given every THREE days and therefore reduces the stress of pilling. However, some cats get a little nutty on the Mirt and do better on the Cypro.

Last fall, my female cat, Desiree, had bladder stone surgery.  It didn't go smoothly but that's a different story. I brought her back in to the vets because she wasn't eating on her own and she was sneezing.  She was put on cypro twice a day for about 7 days.  She started eating almost immediately, but I continued to syringe feed her for a while until she was eating enough.  Actually that's not entirely true. The last time I syringe fed her, the syringe stuck and the food sprayed all over the room, so I gave up syringe feeding.  She was also taking lysine to boost her immune system.  She loved the smell and taste of that.  I mixed it in her soft food and she would eat it all.

Well apparently my cat got really sleepy from the dose he got, and scared me . He was so wobbly on his feet . I called the vet and he said to not give him anymore till I talk to him in the morning. He seems more alert already, but still kind of out of it. I think he might of licked his food a little bit last night, but I am not sure if it was my other cat. He had bladder stones removed 10 days ago. They had him eating at the vet, and we had him eating for awhile, but then he got nauseous from the antibiotic he was on, so we stopped the antibiotic. Just a nervous nelly here.

How is he this morning?  It's natural to be a "nervous nelly" after  having gone thru what you've just gone thru with him
Here's hoping you can either get the dose of cypro right, or get him on something else to help his appetite

This morning I got worried about his 3 rd eye lid, it was up more then usual. Off to the vet we went. He said his eye is fine. He also said he had to eat. So I am now syringe feeding him and giving nutracal. I about to give him a dose of the appetite stimulants it cut the pill into an 1/8 . I am really so nervous. He did lose weight. He is 16.6 pounds. They said he was 16 when he left the vet after surgery and then he was 1$ in less then a week? It makes no sense to me. Say a prayer for us this starts to help him eat! I am a wreck!
