Hi! I am new to this site and also new to the world of rescuing cats. Yesterday 9/04/2013 My parents where on the Jones Beach trail that stretches 4 miles in Long Island NY along the way they found what appeared to be a stray that started to follow them for almost a mile so they decided to call me. the cat wouldn't follow them across one of the 3 bridges on the path and scurried into the bushes. They described the cat to me as young and extremely thin. we returned and hour later with a cage and some cat food. it didn't take long for us to find her/him with the smell of a nice gravy and tuna wet food. the cat followed the can right into the cage. Unfortunately I own 5 cats at home and there is just no room for a sixth.

Upon examination of the cat she/he got nervous in the cage and started to hiss and growl (not suprising i mean we just picked her up and put her in a cage and into the car) It seems the cat has signs of abuse and neglect. i sat with her for almost 45 min in the morning just talking to her/him but not moving at all she got pretty comfortable in  the front of the cage hwere i was sitting and even started to close her eyes and sleep..she is always ok as long as i dont  move but  the minuet i move or get up she moves back to the back of the cage and starts to hiss. to me that shows that at some point in her life she was abused.

I only have her/him for a couple of days. I have a coworker that works with the NY ASPCA and she is getting the kitty a place to stay in one of the many animal rescue facilities.

I just want to be able to make her comfortable and not so terrified while she stays with me so any suggetions??

btw we named her/him Trail Mix.

Welcome to The Cat Site.
Thank you for rescuing Trail Mix; you likely saved his/her life.
She is scared, and would be with anyone. Her world has been turned upside down. To make her less scared/frightened, I would cover the trap with a blanket, leaving one side uncovered; she'll feel safer that way. If the trap is big enough to hold a blanket or small cat bed/box, put one in; she can hide under either if she feels scared.
Play soft music while you're not in the room. Do you have Feliway? That is a calming agent that you plug into an electrical outlet.
Try to feed her at the same time, she she'll get use you coming/going.
By all means, when you have time, go into the room and sit with her. You can read, sew, work on your computer, quietly. Although you will only have her for a few days, she'll start getting use to humans. and activities. (Ritz' foster mom didn't own a television, so who knows what Ritz thought of my tv when she first heard it!).
Let us know how it goes.
