My cat had surgery 8 days ago for bladder stones. He got a good report from the vet yesterday. He gained back the pound he lost, and the stitches are out. He got a cortisone shot. He has no appetite. I am trying to make his new food more appealing, I added lower sodium chicken  broth, and he looked at it and licked his lips and walked away. He is drinking, and peeing all over the place except in the box. the vet said this is normal during recovery, and the normal urine stream will return in a few weeks and it will be in the litter box. The vet gave him Nutracal yesterday. Any advice here on getting him to eat? I thought the cortisone would help him want to eat, he is less active then usual, but I would guess after bladder surgery you would be. He must be eating something , right? he did gain back a pound that he lost. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Is he at the vet's or at home? How much is he eating? He must eat at least half his normal caloric intake to stave off fatty liver. The licking of the lips and walking away from food are classic signs of nausea in cats. Is he on any pain meds? I'm wondering if he is in pain or nauseous from any meds he is on that is causing the loss of appetite? I would ask your vet about these possibilities. Be sure to discuss pain meds (buprenex) and anti-nausea meds (Cerenia). He may also benefit from an appetite stimulant like cyproheptadine but only after pain and/or nausea is addressed.

You could try adding Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter to the box as he  is probably associating the pain he was feeling to the box.  Also, try warming up his food and adding a bit of water to it to make it the consistency of oatmeal.  Many years ago when I was having a hard time getting my kitty to eat, I opened a can of tuna and put the juice onto a tray lined with aluminum foil.  Be sure the tray has a lip so it doesn't spill!  I then placed it in the freezer and froze it.  When it was frozen, I pulled off the foil and broke the frozen juice into small pieces and placed in a freezer bag in the freezer.  At mealtime, I took a piece of the frozen tuna juice and placed it on top of the warmed up food for it to melt.  She liked the tuna juice and subsequently ate the rest of the food in her bowl, too.

We just got back from the vet. Roscoe needed some fluids, so they gave it to him. They also gave him more Nutracal. He was given an appetite  stimulant called "Cyproheptadine". I hope this works.... He told me to add clam juice, or tuna juice to the food, liverwurst, anything he wants for a few days. Does the appetitie stimulant usually work?

Yes.  I've given it to my kitties before when they've been sick and needed to eat.  Sometimes it works a bit too well.  LOL

Right now he is sleepy- the vet told us this can happen, and then he will sleep a little bit and then he will start to eat we hope. How long till the medicine starts to work and get him to  eat?

It can take a couple of doses before you see any real effect, but be persistent.
