Sorry if I am covering something already answered - if so, please direct me - but how do you calculate the amount of DRIED liver as part of a Frankenprey diet?  We don't have access to Freeze dried liver here in Australia (or any of the many options for organs and supplements and commercial raw the US seems to have), but I have found two sources of dried liver.  Not sure how they dry it, probably with heat.  The one I got a sample of was like chunks of hard black plastic.  I've tried many ways to include liver and kidney in the diet, but it looks like I may have a win with one cat if I can use the dried stuff....so, how to calculate?

Thanks!

You need to know the moisture level of both the dried liver and the wet, raw liver. What type of liver is it (beef?). According to the USDA database beef liver is about 70% moisture but chicken liver is about 76%.   Does the dried level package say what the moisture level is?

The general equation is:

WM - moisture level of wet liver

WA - amount of wet liver

DM - moisture level of dried liver

DA - amount of dried liver

DA = ( (1 - WM) * WA) / (1 - DM)

So if the dried liver has 5% moisture and wet liver has 70% moisture and you want to know how much of the dried liver is the equivalent to 6 oz of wet liver:

WM - 0.7 (70%)

WA = 6

DM = 0 .05 (5%)

DA = ( (1 - 0.7) * 6) / (1 - 0.05)

      = ( 0.3 * 6) / 0,95

      = 1.8 / 0.95

      = 1.9

1.9 oz of the dried liver is equivalent to 6 oz of wet liver.

If you want to know how much wet liver is the equivalent of 3 oz of dried liver:

WA = ( (1 - DM) * DA) / (1 - WM)

WM - 0.7

DM = 0.05

DA = 3

WA =  ( (1 - 0.05) * 3 ) / (1 - 0.7)

      = (0.95 * 3) / 0.3

     = 2.85 / 0.3

    = 9.5

9.5 oz of wet liver is the equivalent of 3 oz dried.

Edit : Added spaces to make equations easier to read.

Thanks Mschauer and LDG!  I will have to do some requests for info...once I have it, I'll do my brain justice (and your great post mschauer) and work through those equations!!  I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.  I've sent one info request already, so I think they are going to get sick of me...before I even buy a product to test!  Not to worry, I have a bit of time as having to go through food trials in any case - the liver will be tried in about 3 weeks, all going well!

Phew!  Well, I thought I should update.  I've finally got some liver products that both cats are eating - only if I mix one with another!!  So one type (and it is specific from one store - 'same' product from a different brand will not work!)  is 100% dried liver.  Unfortunately, they don't know the moisture content, so, as it is very snappy, I've gone with 5%.

The other product is the good cat treats from Ziwi peak, moisture content 15%.  BUT, LIVER content is 25%.

Anyways, I think I'm sorted, although the maths of doing half/half and one only 25% has fried my brain.  My scales don't do points of grams either, and not too sure exactly how relaible they are to the gram (so several readings!)  I have my Ava serve as about 15 pieces of ziwipeak treats and about a 5cmx2xm size of dried liver each day.  I went at 10% liver as part of the frankenprey calculations, as other organs are a big battle to both get and get down their throats.

SO after many trials, including a slow food intro trial for poor upset-tummy-Ava, I finally think we're balanced.  YAY! (And her tummy is doing good!)

Likewise, I think we are also finally balanced for Kato....after about 2 years of tempting him with various concoctions of various livers and various organs in various states of disguise.  It did take him 6 weeks to start eating these treats, so hopefully, it will stick!!

Thanks for your helps!
