Hello

I went away for a week and asked my roommates to look after my cat (they also have a kitten that's about 6 months old.) When I got back today I noticed my cat had a large patch of fur missing on the side of his neck (larger than a quarter) and a few little scabs above it and one scab on the back of his neck.

He is an indoor cat.4 years old.

He doesn't seem bothered by the scabs or bald patch. The skin seems a little flaky/ dry though. Hair is starting to grow back. I don't see him itching that spot in excess (we're in a small apartment I can see him all the time.) He's eating normally, playing, sleeping...

Don't know what to do :( I feel terrible this was going on while I was away

I'm not really sure what would cause that. My sister had a cat that would scratch and bite at her fur. She had small bald spots all over. She only did it when my sister would leave her alone. The vet put her on some anti anxiety medicine and she stopped doing it as often. You mentioned your roommates had a kitten. Does it get along with your cat? The people on this site are great. They've helped me a lot with my cat. I'm sure you will get some good advice and feedback. Hope your kitty heals well and doesn't have any more problems. Sending good vibes to you and kitty. :vibes:

Did you ask your roommates what happened?  It's hard to say.  From your description I first thought food allergies, but from the looks of it, now I'm not thinking that.  Did they do something different while you were gone?  It almost looks like he rubbed himself raw on something, like he got his head stuck in something and tried to get out.  But since he's not bothered by it, you might let it go for a few days and see if the fur just starts growing back, then you will know he just rubbed it off somehow.  If it gets worse, then we can readdress it...could be food allergies, anxiety, ringworm

One time I tried to walk my cat.  It kept trying to back out so I had to put the collar on tighter.  The cat still wouldn't walk so I carried him around in my arms for a bit but he was fussing so much I took him back inside.  Later, I learned that the collar had rub his neck raw in a spot.  It stayed that way for a long time.

Was your cat trying to get out of a collar that was maybe too tight?

If it helps - you shouldn't walk your cat on a collar, they hate it. You should use a harness as it stops them from panicking. Making the collar tighter would just make the panic problem worse, and you should never do a collar that tight. Sorry.

I think it was anxiety
missing his human. Animals count on the routine and the bond of creates. Those routines were caused by the way your cat taught you how to meet their emotional and instinctual needs.

He was probably missing you. Got a little depressed...and probably got a bit more depressed when he realized you locked up the press and changed the netflix password. Lol. His bit of depression took him out of his routine of eating, sleeping, giving attention
