Long time no see!

Alright so I have been fostering for a group since May. I'm on kitten #5 for this shelter (well into the 100s for other groups!)

I got this kitten in early August. She had ulcers on her eyes and an URI. She was on Tobrex drops 2 times daily. And an antibiotic.. I can't remember what it was at the moment and can't find her info sheet.

She went back to the vet 8 days after I brought her home for a recheck on her eyes as they were pretty bad. The eyes had no improvement, if not gotten worse. Her URI was also back. I was told to continue the tobrex drops 2 times daily as well as adding in an eye ointment, tetracycline 3 times daily. Five to ten minutes after the drops were put in. The antibiotic was noroclav. She was getting half of a 62.5mg tablet twice daily for 15 days.

The eyes were not getting any better so honestly I just stopped treatment on her eyes without consulting the vet, and within 2-3 days they had cleared up perfectly. She has damage to the cornea from the ulcers but no swelling, no discharge, no more ulcers. I have just been wiping them a few times daily with a clean damp cloth.

Anyways she was 2 days off of the noroclav when her URI came back again. She she went back to the vet, and the vet said her eyes were beautiful to keep it up! But put her back on antibiotics for her URI. She's now on zithromax 1/8th of a 250mg tablet once daily for 5 days, then wait 7 days and repeat 5 more pills on 5 more days. Also got a few cans of a/d canned food. Today is only day two of the zithromax but she is miserable. I have taken her into the bathroom with the water on full hot to try and clear the junk out.

I don't know why I just feel like there's something different they could do. I've never even heard of these antibiotics.. when I was with different rescues we used baytril or amoxil or orbax or something like that. And that was in a shelter environment around other sick cats. She has no other sick cats here just me and my other pets. I'm wondering if she's just chronic and will always be like this. Or if FIV or something could be a possibility? and at what point can I ask the shelter if she can see a different vet??

I also got lysine to put into her wet food but she's so far just turned that down. She is eating dry food and drinking and is still pretty active even though she's sick.

I've had good results using famvir (famcyclovir), idoxuridine and doxycycline for cats with URI/Herpes. Have on occasion had to add cidofovir (another eye drop) to the regime.

Recently used orbax on a kitten who did not tolerate the doxy; but, that just didn't take care of the problem as well. Have started him on Idox and will hopefully see results soon.
