Hi,

If you read my other thread, "Very Nervous About Cat With Ear Infection," you'll see I've been struggling with allergies and some twitching in my 5 year old Grace. Today she was fine. Although last night she was meowing at her water dish again, still no idea why. She only does this at night and it's filled so it's odd. I recently had changed it so I put the other one back to see if that makes a difference. I brought it up to the vet where she was just last Thursday. He felt around her stomach after I told him and said she seemed okay. He said it might just be a quirky behavior. I also spoke to him on the phone and he said she seems very healthy. He didn't see the need for bloodwork and thought he could rule out organ issues, cancer, neurological issues, and diabetes. Grace is supposed to be on prednisone for her allergies but I've delayed giving them since I was concerned about her being on them again so soon. Anyway, she eats 4-5 meals a day, smaller portions. I fed her this morning, some wet food and her appetite was normal. Then later she played and chased her sister around. There were no issues. About 4 hours later, my mom who is spending some time with me fed her some dry food. Not but a couple minutes after eating it, she vomited all of it. It was whole pieces like she didn't even chew! My mom admits that she might have "overdid" it when giving her the food. I panicked and rang up the emergency vet who told me that it wasn't anything to worry about and it seemed like she ate too fast. She said as long as it's not a frequent thing, she should be fine. The thing is though, Grace never vomits. She can usually eat a lot and has no issues. I probably remember maybe 2 instances where she vomited before and that's it and I think it was hairballs.

I'm just curious if vomiting occasionally is very bad in cats? I've heard varying stories. I've owned cats for several years and this has happened before where my cat ate too fast and puked up portions of food whole. However, ever since losing my other cat to lymphoma, I am very nervous about any vomiting at all. She wanted to eat again right after she puked, the poor thing but I made her wait a few hours. She ate about 2 hours ago and so far so good. Her appetite is normal and she seems okay. Thoughts?

She probably ate too fast and whole food shortly after eating is normal.  Cats don't chew most of their kibble they swallow it whole.  That's why the whole thing about kibble helping with their teeth is a myth because they don't chew most of it.  Wet food is better but if you want to give her some kibble there are some things you can do to slow her down.  You can put one of her toy balls in the dish with her food.  She has to eat around it so she eats slower.

Thanks for the response. She did seem to eat this very rapidly. I don't know why. She was eating with her sister and Delilah was taking her time, but Grace was done in seconds. She loves the dry food best of all even though I hear it isn't good for her. That's why I only give her small amounts of it twice a day. She never usually has an issue with vomiting it even though she sometimes swipes some from her sister. I might not give her anymore of it tonight though just to let her belly rest. The vet actually talked about switching her to a different dry food though for her allergies.

I apologize again for being so neurotic. I am driving my mother crazy. I actually had to go take an hour break and go for a walk because I've been so anxious. It helped but now that I'm back inside, I'm fussing over her again. My mom actually thinks that is why she puked, from me stressing her out which I couldn't rule out as a possibility.

Cats DO pick up on our stress, but in this case, it sounds like she did eat too fast.  If she is going to be fed kibble, perhaps she should get it just a little at a time so she doesn't do this.
