my cat had her kittens a day and a half ago, the first 2 were still born I think from being in the birth canal too long. the last 2 seem to be fine but the mama cat has something protruding out of her still, and she wont have anything to do with the surviving kittens. she doesn't seem to be in any pain but seems to be in shock. some people I have talked to thinks this may be a variety of things but most agree that I should give it a couple days to see if this works itself out. does anyone have any experience with this? I have been feeding the kittens milk replacement hoping momma will eventually be able to help. any input would be helpful

I really think she really needs to be seen by a vet now. Her behavior indicates something is clearly wrong, and whatever is protruding out of her is not good. It's already been a day and half. I wouldn't wait any longer. Is there an emergency vet near you?

I also think she needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. I took in a pregnant stay cat in my home and she delivered 7 beautiful kittens but I was worried about the mom and when the kittens were 3 days old I packed up Mama cat and all 7 kittens and took them to the vet. The mama cat had a lump and I was worried she still had a baby in her. Everything turned out fine but I felt better after everyone had seen the vet. In my case it turned out her bladder was just full. She was taking care of her kittens though. Hope everything turns out okay.

Agree, this is clearly an ASAP vet errand.

You can sometimes wait and see although the situation is threatening, but it is only if everyone are contend and happy, NOT in an ongoing emergency situation where everything is falling apart.

So why several people said you can wait several days?  Easy, in a world where you can get a cat for free, or for a buck a paw and two for the tail, these people usually dont go to vet if they arent absolutely forced. Its cheaper to get another cat instead.

It is also cheaper to get another friend than make pains to keep one friend they do already have, no?...

Contact a vet as soon you can, begin by phone if you wish, but do it.

Good luck with nursing the baby kittens too!

Good luck!

Wow! Totally agree with the comments about getting her to a vet ....  hopefully  you got her in there today.

Make sure to keep the kittens warm.  They may need a heating pad turned on low  or hot water bottles wrapped in towels.   make sure to leave some space for them to crawl away from the heat if they get too warm.

 Please keep us posted!

unfortunately I cannot afford a vet bill on a holiday weekend, call it what you will but there is no cash. whatever it is seems to be getting smaller I am keeping a close eye on her but that is all I can do until tuesday morning. the kittens are already on a heating pad and seem to be doing fine also.

If you cant so you cant.  Just to try and do your best with what you CAN DO, which you are doing nicely, as the kittens are OK and mom a little better.  :)

But it is a big difference between not being able to, respective to give advices "you may wait some days and see whatever comes out".

Continue to take good care of them all, them kittens and the sick mom.  Make sure the mom has it warm and cozy.  Its a fight [edit:  STRUGGLE is the word I wanted to use here] along a small way, so fight on!

Good luck!

I ended up taking the momma cat to the emergency vet and turns out another day wouldn't have mattered as she had a prolapsed uterus and unless I had upwards of $3,500 to start there was no way no help her. Sadly I opted to have her put down. The kittens continue to do well however are sleeping more than I would like between feedings and I am hoping that is just a growthspurt type thing.

Sad about the mom. RIP.   If you wish, you can have a memorial thread on her in our Memory Forum "Crossing the bridge".

From now 100% attention on the kittens!

Now, they do sleep much between feedings, they are about 4 days old, right?  As long they wake up to be fed etc...

Do they gain weigh every day as they should? You do weigh them?

Continue with reports and questions about them, please.  You can start a new thread just for them, perhaps best so.

Good luck!
