Hi everyone,
I adopted a beautiful 3 year old cat named Heidi from a rescue shelter and will be picking her up tomorrow. I live in an apartment so splurged for the Modkat litter box, which is a top entry. At her foster home, she uses a standard litter box and has never had any problems.
I'm wondering if it will be too much for Heidi to figure out how to use the top entry box while she's settling in? Would it be better for me to buy a cheap regular litter box while she gets used to my home? Or should I just use the Modkat from the start?
Thanks!
Kim

I personally like the design of the Modkat (I am a designer, also.)  - However, I believe that the Modkat was designed for the convenience of us, humans and not the cats.

Please take a look at this: http://www.catinfo.org/?link=litterbox  CTRL+F "top entry" and you will find an excerpt about the Clevercat box, which is basically a cheaper version of the Modkat.

To me a good litter box is one that is large, open, and high sides. I actually find that closed litter boxes tend to be more unsanitary, as they collect more dust inside and keep the odor inside. Personally, I'd feel that the less I see the litter box as a litter box the less I "forget" about it since it's not in sight. I also have two cats, so I need to make sure when one is using a box he can tell if the other is about to bother him.

That's not to say that your new cat will not use the Modkat litter box. However, I would put at least two boxes. The general golden rules is one box per cat plus another. I live in a small 2bedroom in NYC, and I have three litter boxes for my two cats.

I too live in a small apartment, and the litter is located in my bedroom. This is my boy's favourite room in the apartment, I prefer not to have litter in my kitchen, the bathroom has insufficient floor space, the sitting room is my boy's least favoured room and is also noisier and less private, and the dining room/spare room gets used by guests which would cause significant distress for my boy as his toilet would end up being moved every time someone was here to stay.  When  I brought him home I gave him a choice of a covered box and a tray, and as he never used the tray this was abandoned after a month or so. The covered box I have is sadly no longer available as  - as litter boxes go it looks pretty good and gives my long legged boy plenty space.

I did look at the Modkat when I got Mouse but in addition to the high price I figured it might cause problems for a cat if it had a leg injury for any reason or became arthritic. (like my previous cat was).

If I was you I'd get a cheep (ha ha) but OK alternative and put both out for your new furbaby and let her choose. The awful thing with the Modkat if it doesn't work is the high cost but I wonder if a slightly more open and user friendly way to keep in use for a younger cat might be to simply use the lower outer box without the fancy lid and liners?  That way if she doesn't like the complete unit perhaps the nice colour base might still get some use and fit in with your decor?

Having looked at pinkman's link I find myself interested in the Kat Kave as a replacement for my boy's box when he's scratched it to death - he's a very enthusiastic digger!

Can I put arm an hammer baking soda in the littler?
I presume you can given that Arm and Hammer make litter with baking soda as one of the ingredients, however I'm not sure what purpose it would serve other than adding another form of dust. If the litter is smelling it is an indication it needs to get changed. If the litter odour is really bad I would tend to try a different type of litter.

Thanks for all your help! I ended up getting a normal uncovered litterbox and will be keeping it next to the Modkat while Heidi settles in.
I believe I can return the Modkat in 30days if she won't use it.
