So as some of you know a few weeks ago I adopted a new kitten named Bagel. He's healthy now and has been getting free roam of the apartment along with my three year old, Lox. I figured it was time for me to make a thread for BOTH of them (already made a thread of Lox before) not only to document Bagel's growth but also their relationship with each other. Kinda like a photo journal? Maybe? Also, I feel like this thread can go into the Behavior section maybe... Since I am going to document their interactions. But at the same time it'll probably also be a photo dump for each of them, hence the reason I have it in the Fur Pictures section.

The Cats:

This is Lox. She's a three year old tortoiseshell and white DSH. She's an independent woman. Doesn't like being handled too often but when she does she'll be all over you. She's quite outgoing with strangers, granted that you don't force her to be with you. I've had her a little over a year now, and she came from ASPCA HQ. She likes to imitate a cheese wedge.

And here is Bagel, at 15 weeks old. I consider him a red point DLH, He was originally located in a kill-shelter in Tennessee. Eventually a rescue in NYC pulled him and then ended up with me. He had a really bad URI and a coccidia infection but he pulled through. He can be quite a butt but he's still learning how to be cat.

Dynamics:

Lox is definitely alpha! The cats both get free roam of the apartment now. There's no growling or hissing. Lox occasionally stalks and ambush/swats Bagel to let him know he's in her territory and he needs to know his manners. Bagel respects her well, and does not talk back. If there is one person/cat that Bagel will listen to - it's Lox.

This is pretty normal these days. Lox gets the office chair, and Bagel's on the floor. What is she thinking exactly?

"I'm the boss, that's what I'm thinking."

There was one instance however when Bagel was on the office chair Lox came up and decided to hang out with him.

"I better give Lox space!"

Of course, this didn't last too long. Once Bagel moved, Lox got annoyed and swatted him without claws as always. Now, it's been maybe a week and a half since they have gotten full access without supervision. Will they ever become friends? I'm not sure. It took Lox well over six months to get to the point where she would sleep next to me. Perhaps, with time, they may become friends.

"The boss is I."

To be continued.

Bagel still prefers to sleep on the floor, but he will take a five minute nap with Lox on rare occasions. When Bagel touched Lox slightly Lox let a very silent hiss, re-positioned herself and went back to sleep.

They are apparently already pals. Not really friends at yet, but surely more than two cats coexisting in the same flat tolerating each other.   The fact they are very much near each other is revealing = already pals.

Good luck!

I totally agree.  Sleeping near each other is a big step.  Before you know it, one day you'll see them cuddled up together and your heart will melt!

BTW, both lovely kitties. What's not to like about bagels and lox?   You take nice photos and I really enjoy the narration :)

Tonight I have a video. :) Both of them are getting more comfortable with eachother. They start sleeping separately but when I wake up I see them pretty close to eachother!

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!! :heart2:

Yes, little by little they're becoming friends! Not quite there yet... but in my experience, females take longer than males to be cool with newbies. :lol3: Flowerbelle is a very neutral female, and has never had an issue with new kitty - but she's very secure in her role as princess. :flail:

Ming Loy is hissy at first, but comes around in a few weeks to months.

And Spooky - well - it's going on three years and she's not very tolerant of Chumley. It only took her about a year to stop hissing at Billy. Before that, it took her six months to stop actively hissing at Ming Loy, and another six months before I caught her grooming Ming (and Spooky's definition of grooming is a few licks on the head).

So clearly you don't have a Spooky on your hands. ;)

In this photo Bagel looks like he iis stealing some momy moments from Lox! So cute both of them!

I could learn a lot from you. It has been 3 months I am trying to introduce 3 orphans to Lucy who is a lot like lox in character(a bit more agressive)...except she is now sick. Have you had a thread on how you did it?

Ps. Really nice story telling

djoe, I didn't do anything really special besides introducing my cats the "proper" way. I did isolate them for almost a month, since Bagel had coccidia and an URI in the beginning, along with ear mites and fleas. Since your resident cat is sick, maybe isolate her from the kittens and gradually introduce via scent? I also used Feliway and Rescue Remedy, along with Vetriscience Composure treats. :)

Some days while the cats were isolated I would stay in my bedroom with Lox for majority of the day (esp a weekend), and play jazz or classical music. I also showered Lox with lots of healthy "treats", mostly freeze-dried raw since that is balanced and I did not need to worry about her diet being not balanced.

Things have been getting a bit salty around here! Before, Lox was the one initiating play/fights and now Bagel is the one initiating! Perhaps Bagel's hormones are raging! Too bad for him as he will be getting neutered this coming Friday!

djoe, sorry to hear that things have been frustrating on your end. I'm not a pro, but perhaps you can make a thread in the behavior section so we can help you out. I was thinking maybe you need to introduce one kitten at a time to the elder.... It does take a lot of time, please don't give up :(.

It's been a while! Time to photo dump my two cats!

Not a happy camper eh, Bagel? Luckily that cone was off very quickly. Well, you're neutered. You only need to go through that once.

"Please don't eat me for breakfast! I know my metabolism is slow and I'm kinda plump since the neutering but I am really not that tasty, I swear!"

"Attention.... He takes all the attention."

"I will just sleep it off."

"You seek me now?"

"I guess he's not too bad when he's asleep."

Bagel has been testing Lox a lot recently, she will yowl occasionally now to tell him off. Looks like Bagel is going to need more human-interactive play time even more.
