My newborn kitten, Lucky's umbilical cord recently fell off. I noticed the today the site looked like it was yellow and pus filled. I started to do some research to find out if this was normal (didn't think it was) and when I looked at it again it had actually opened and there was yellow tinted (mostly looked white) pus coming out of it I wiped it up and now I need to know if there's something I can or should do for the area.

This kitten needs to get to a vet soon. Is there an emergency clinic in your area? Any infection can be fatal to such a young kitten. Puss at the umbilical site is not normal.

No, the closest one I know of is a fair ways away and I only have my bike for travel. He doesn't seem to be in pain and he has actually calmed down since the pus came out. It's not red and puffy, hopefully that's a good sign. Once I realized it really was pus I freaked. Since it's labor day weekend I don't think the nearest vet is actually open, but I'll have to call and check in the morning. Right now though is there something I can do in the meantime?

The sack opening up and pus freely coming out gives some relief of course. But the pus isnt nothing normal, it usually heals nice and clean.   I wonder, do you have there some human medic personnel you can get help from? Or even someone very experienced with dogs and basic medic care for dogs.

I imagine basic  pus / infection treatment are more or less the same. as long as you work on the outside.   Dosages of antibioticum is something else.

If not, perhaps some vet does answer telephone questions, even if they dont want visiting patients.

If everything else fails, use home remedies, but this is to be desperate.  Try first and get prof help, vet or human medic, on phone if you cant visit.

Good luck!

Ive called around and the only vets who actually picked up were ones outside my area. They all just wanted me to bring him in. (I live in a small town mind you) my local vet is closed. I'm hoping that this isn't harmful to him but I'm using some topical cream that I used when my oldest male got into a bad fight and I'm hoping that it's not going to have any harmful effects, least until my vet opens.
