Hello everyone,

I havent posted in a while, I have, well had, 2 male one year old cats. I have posted in the past about the kitten that was diagnosed with HCM. In July I was posting a dining room set for sale on the internet. I dont know why, but I noticed a "nearby areas" so I clicked on it. And wouldnt you know it said "Free Orange Tabby Kittens" Again.... I dont know why, but I responded. I live in the suburbs of Chicago, the kittens were located in Michigan. Yes..... I drove there, when I arrived there were 3 kittens, fleas everywhere, one had a bite mark, and another an eye infection. As I already have 2 cats, I could only take one. The lady that posted them had a couple children that informed me, they are stolen for "pit bull fighting bait" Seriously??? I was driving home from Michigan at 8:00pm and realized I had to go to an emergency vet for at minimum flea treatment. I had bloodwork done FIV negative, Capstar Frontline and she also had round worms and coccidia. All of which I treated. So.... I couldnt live with the 2 other kittens being out in those conditions, yes... I drove back to Michigan to get the other 2. Now I am driving home with 2 sick kittens covered in fleas and once again at the emergency vet. Flea infested sneezing eyes draining... I was fortunate my mom agreed to take the 2. I apologize, this is a long story, but I need some advice. All 3 kittens went to my usual vet, they were all separated from other cats. I have one male orange tabby with HCM, and another buff tabby both one years old. The kitten had received Albon x 2 for the coccidia. Drontal and Panacur both for the worms, finally after weeks of diarrhea, I had a negative stool. I noticed the orange tabby had a "fat lip" took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with a rodent ulcer. The vet did not prescribe steroids due to the HCM, but rather Atopica. The bottom lip resolved and then the top lip was swollen, back on the Atopica. Are rodent ulcers caused from stress? Then I noticed the buff tabby had an issue with his inner eyelid staying out, then I began to notice he had diarrhea and was "gassy" I took him and his stool to the vet and was told it was most likely Haw's syndrome. I had eye ointment, Diagel and Metronidaole. 3 weeks later I have noticed some improvement. So... Yesterday I noticed the inner eyelid on the orange tabby was showing, called my vet and she believes its viral, the kitten must have introduced a virus to the other cats. She is showing no signs or symptoms, but must be a carrier. I wanted to do a good thing and help these kittens, give them a good home, so far my good deed has cost thousands of dollars. Please understand I dont mind spending money to get them all back to health, but thousands if dollars is a lot for me. I now feel guilt for getting my own cats sick. I feel terrible. The rodent ulcers are not completely healed, the older guys have diarrhea. The kitten is doing better, but my other 2 arent getting better as quickly as I hoped. Both have the third eyelid showing and diarrhea. I am going to the vet and treating everything. Has anyone ever brought a kitten into their home with a similar experience that they could share? I dont know what else to do, my cat is scheduled for his cardiac ultrasound next week, which is only making me more nervous. I am so worried I created a disaster trying to help these kittens. I am so happy they are out of those living conditions, but I never intended to create health concerns for my 2 cats. I sanitize everything, kept them separate. Separate food and water bowls, all medications given. I bought disposable litterboxes so there wouldnt be any cross contamination. Any advice?

Oh, thank you for helping these kitties!  Poor dears.  You have done a good job of taking precautions.

I have fostered many times and in spite of the precautions, my cats have gotten sick.  Sometimes its just a matter of the newcomers having germs my cats hadn't met yet.  Fortunately, they got over everything and I am hoping yours will too.

Keep doing what you're doing.  With medication and care, they should all get better soon.

Thank you for your response. I am hoping they recover soon as well. I feel terrible, they both have diarrhea and I am taking stool samples to the vet weekly. The stool comes back negative, we dewormed them just to be safe. I dont know what more I can do to help them.

Bless your heart for taking such good care of the kitties! Giardia causes diarrhea... it's difficult to detect in a stool sample, and doesn't always show up. You have to ask specifically for a Giardia test. It's not in a regular stool sample test. Test results can come back negative even if they have this parasite! Ask your Vet to treat for Giardia based on symptoms. Your Vet will know all about the tricky test results! Metronidazole is only effective 67% of the time!! Ask for Panacur it works like a charm! Been there done that! The voice of experience!
