I rescued a 6 week old Manx kitten that I named Otis. I've had him for 3 weeks and he had not had a real bowel movement during this time. He mainly dribbled watery stool for a few days and would then stop producing any stool while still maintaining his appetite. He would go to his litter box and strain to poop and then wail loudly.

I initially took him to several vets, none of which were able to pinpoint exactly what was wrong with him. Finally I found a vet willing to work with me to save Otis instead of insisting I put him down. This morning, he had a deobstipation procedure. So far so good except the poor baby is leaking poop like crazy! The vet said he likely has spinal cord problems. He has feeling on the right side of his anus but not the left. The vet was unable to predict if he would be continent in the future and sent us home with Lactulose. He is able to control urinating.

Has anyone else had this experience? If Otis is incontinent will the poop constantly leak out very watery and for the rest of his life? Any recommendations as far as diet? Also, the stool that is currently leaking out of him has a bit of blood in it. Is this due to the deobstipation procedure or is this cause for concern? Any advice at all is welcomed!! :)

Hi,

I rescued a kitten that could not control his stool. He was 3 months old, I thought initially it was urine it was so bad. After several vet visits I went to a specialist. He thought he may have had a virus, he was started on Royal Canin GI HE Prescription diet and it was a miracle! I dealt with severe diarrhea for months. But I promise it can be resolved.

I think the surgery that the vet tried is the only thing that can be tried.  I can't imagine the diarrhea is part of it though that is something that could be resolved the same way as other cats.  I would get the fecal redone sometimes, especially with diarrhea the parasities are missed.  I would also get a test for the other parasites like giardia there are two others as well.

You could try boiled chicken or boiled chicken and rice for a few days to see if the diarrhea clears up.  If it does than you know it was either some kind of virus or dietary in nature.

Unfortunately I don't think the incontinence itself can be corrected.  It's an unfortunate outcome that sometimes happens with Manx kittens.
