All cats have collars and nice new carriers with soft sides and plush floors. They will be moved into the master bedroom where we've already put the bed and will have some sweaty clothes on it for scent reassurance (as well as rubbed around the room on corners and other common scent areas). They are staying in there with the door closed until everything is moved in and mostly settled. I hope they do okay! 1.5 hrs is the longest they've ridden so wish us luck :)

Best of luck on your move.

1.5 hours is not much of a  ride unless unless they  just really freak in the car. I f mine do, I play music for them. Once the radio broke so I had to  sing to them.

The move went. awful. We couldn't close the cats in the bathroom (the only room with a door) so they had to go in their carriers around 10:30am so we could pack the trucks. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. We couldn't fit all my furniture and had to rearrange and call for back up.

We finally got loaded up and on the road... but due to Labor Day traffic and two accidents, the 1.5 hr drive took 2.5 hrs. Then we had a misunderstanding with the landlord and no keys were at the house. I had to drive to get them and by the time I got back it was 6pm. The cats were in their crates 8 hours :( Someone pooped and Garfunkel peed ALL. OVER. HIMSELF. From his front legs down his belly and down his hind legs. I was traumatized and nearly had a panic attack. I feel so awful that something that was already bad (moving) was made even worse.

They have the master bedroom and bathroom. Joni is hissing and growling; she is furious. The boys are head butting me but still extremely wary and nervous and jumping at any sounds. I'm not sure they'll ever trust me again. :( :( :( I cleaned garfunkel with a wet towel but will probably need to do it again; he was very unhappy.

I'm so upset that I planned so poorly when I thought I had planned so well. And that the cats had to suffer for my stupidity :( :(

Don't be so hard on yourself, you did the best you could for your kits.  Get past this as the worst is over.  At least now you've  moved in and cats will eventually settle down.  The best is yet to come

I just moved myself Parsleysage, much sympathy!    It is such a vexing process and then at the end of it you've got freaked out kitties just when you are exhausted and need to finally relax.   I hope yours settle in quickly.   Mine seem to think I've brought them to some sort of twilight zone with the same furniture but another planet and they don't like it one bit.

Bless your heart.
You did the best you could, and now, thank goodness, the worst is over.

Don't beat yourself up.  They will adjust.  When I moved last year it took some time for my 3 to adjust to their new place.

Moving isn't easy, and you can plan and plan and plan, and there will always be something unexpected that happens.  Once you have all of their things...erm, I mean all of your things, unpacked, they will feel right at home, along with you.

Thank you for the encouragement everyone... I was in a bit of hysteria yesterday, lol. A very emotional day. Sorry for formatting issues, no Internet at the new place yet so I'm on my phone.

The kitties are doing very well now. The boys recovered within a few hours; Garfunkel is clean and dry after giving himself lots of baths. They are sleeping with us, playing, and trying to escape when we go out of the bedroom. As of this morning (Sunday) Joni was still upset but when we came back from cleaning bf's apartment, she had made a lot of progress. She seems fine with the boys again now (was growling and hissing at them) and while she's been spending a decent amount of time under the bed, she also comes up for headbutts and has played with the mousie toys as well.

Tomorrow we will be moving the rest of the big furniture from the garage into its proper rooms. Once that's done I will open the door to the bedroom; this will give the kitties three extra rooms to explore. (Doors will be closed to several rooms.) The boys are more than ready and Joni can either explore or stick with us in the bedroom as she pleases.

Thanks again everyone... I love TCS!!!!!

When I looked up from typing this post I found two brothers cuddled up at the foot of the bed. (Hey, I'm supposed to put MY feet there!) :) They seem pretty happy :)

Oh I'm SO glad things are already better! I'm so sorry things didn't go as planned, but the worst, quite frankly, is a cat getting loose at the new location. And THAT didn't happen, so ALL IS WELL! :rub:

When we moved, several of the cats hid under a chest in the bedroom for... days. One of them basically a couple of weeks. Spooky did come out at night. But it took most of them a LONG time to adjust to the new place. Tuxedo, of course, was convinced the new home was just and all for him. :lol3:

Parsleyage,

How are things going today ? I hope you get things unpacked and situated. Let us know how your cats are doing when things are settled.

You poor thing! Your move sounds about as bad as my last one! :hugs: At one point, I had to take Lucky outside and hose both him and his carrier down! It was not pleasant! My other two cats ride well in the car and have been used to moves, but poor Lucky poops himself EVERY time he goes in the carrier, even if it's just five minutes down the road ! :lol3:

I bought a few Feliway diffusers when I moved and had them going in my new place for the kitties; that seemed to help a lot, and they acclimated quickly. Maybe you could try Feliway! :)

Well, we have been settled in for 7 nights now! We kept the cats in the master bedroom from Saturday PM to Monday PM because we couldn't get the big furniture moved in from the garage to the house until Monday. They took about 24 hours to feel comfortable coming out into the main parts of the house - they would come out if we were out there sitting down, but if anyone moved or made a noise they'd go back to homebase (under the bed in the master bedroom). They still do that every once in awhile if something is particularly noisy or frightening.

Otherwise, they are SO happy having so much space and so many napping places! We had one tiny brief fight between Joni & Simon on Tues or Weds morning, but compared to EVERY night until 1am and EVERY morning starting at 5:30 in my old apartment, this is HEAVEN. We haven't needed to close them out of the bedroom at all. Joni is also being much more confident and cuddly, probably because she doesn't feel hunted down anymore. She's currently sitting next to me as I watch football :)

I'm glad they are doing so well - the last time we moved they were 9 months old so I expected that at 2 years old they'd be more affected by the move. And they were, but nothing compared to some of the experiences described above!

Thank you everyone!!!
