Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to thecatsite but I have to say you guys are great! When I posted a pic of my little guy the feedback I got made me so proud of him! What an awesome caring community!

Anyways, speaking of my little guy, I am in the midst of a move, and he has started waking me up every morning around 6 or 7 if I'm lucky with frantic meowing. I think he is simply stressed regarding things always being packed or moved around but it's getting in the way of my life. Anyway, the vet recommended I try feliway, but with the move I really can't afford a fifty dollar diffuser at the moment. I was informed of a product by Sentry called their calming collar that gives off similar pheromones, and is less than half the price. The reviews seem very positive, but you'll always get the odd one that isn't as with any product. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with the calming collar?

Thanks!

I have tried them for my neurotic Caesar. For the first 24 hours, the collar made his pupils huge (like he was drugged), and he would hide and try to run away from the smell of the collar. After that initial period, the collar did seem to calm him a little, but I ended up taking it off after a few days because the white powder coming off the collar was making his neck very irritated and itchy. The powder is messy and crumbles off as soon as you uncoil the collar, so I would uncoil it over a trashcan and try to tap off some of the powder. Since the collar uses chemicals to mimic pheromones, I ultimately decided against them. I opted for a more natural route and used l-theanine instead, but it had to be given orally. If the collar is only temporary, you could certainly try it, but keep watch out for signs of discomfort.

Petco has the Feliway refills for $17.00 if you pull it up on their website and show at checkout.

I've used this collar for a little over a month now.  Be careful as I've read some horrific bad reactions (hair loss, the latch is not safe and can choke some cats if they try to get it off) however I haven't had any negative effects and it certainly doesn't seem like it drugs my cat at all.

I will continue to use this for another month then probably see what my cat is like without it to see if it's making a difference. I adopted a new cat a month ago, so I use the collar for my resident cat who was not thrilled about his new brother, and he is normally a very nervous cat to start with.

I will say that my cats are getting along great now and the one with the collar is less nervous and more back to normal. However I also use the multicat feliway plug in. Hard to tell what is really working or if it's a combo...but my vet recommended the collar because it stays with the cat at all times.
