I have had 4 orphaned kittens since last Thursday. We guessed they were between 2-3 weeks old at the time, so they're at least 3 weeks now, I would say. We're wanting to start getting them to eat some on their own and using the litter box, but I've never done this before, and I could really use some advice on how to introduce these things to them.

Thanks!

Yay!  Smart little kitten!   That is great for 3 weeks old!!!!   they are really fast learners about food and litter.

With the food just make it available.  This is about the very earliest they ever eat and usually at this age they are still getting nearly all their nutrition from nursing.  so there is not a big rush.   just keep bottle feeding kitten formula,  but a few times a day offer some canned kitten food or "all life stages' cat food (  brands  such as Wellness, Natures Variety ,  Merrick,  Innova Evo , etc. are for all life stages)  .

Don't give them clumping litter at this age because they may eat it.  They are like babies who put everything in their mouth.   Kittens about 3-6 wks explore things with their mouth,  and they may eat litter.  so you don't want them eating the clumping kind.   It's best to start them out on just the regular old non clumping clay ,  or wood pellets if they take to that.     Then after several weeks I switch them to  Worlds best which  is clumping litter made from corn.

Re learning the litterbox.   a big part of it is you cleaning up messes as soon as possible and very well.  Use an enzyme based cleaner to destroy the odor  so they wont be attracted back to the spot.  Check their bedding often and if its soiled,  change it and launder in bleach and hot water.

Also  if they do make a mess, put a little of it in the litterbox.    (For urine put a small piece of paper towel soaked in it.)   That way they DO smell that that's where they should be going.

Keep them in one room and put a few small low-sided boxes or pans ,  easy for them to get into.    They often head for corners so  you may want to put them in corners.     If you see a kitten sniffing around the floor along the wall,  or off behind a piece of furniture.   bring him to the litterbox.

you can also try putting them in the box shortly after a meal.
