Hello, I would like to introduce myself and my two kittens Wellington and Tinker , I will briefly give some background on how I came to adopt them both.

Sadly last Wednesday my beautiful 7 years old cat Ebony was killed by a car and from what my neighbour says she died almost instantly. I was not home when this happened but I am grateful that my babies final moments were in the arms of someone she knew and loved . It broke my heart losing her and I don't need to tell you how that feels as it is to me as painful as losing one of your close family .

Anyway the pain was so bad and the emptiness in the house was unbearable that I started thinking of adopting another kitten, strangely enough I had a dream of a black and white cat with long fur and on the Thursday started looking on adoption sites and I saw the kitten in my dream, I enquired about him and he was up for adoption and then I saw his sister and decided I couldn't separate them so adopted them both .

I picked them up on the Thursday night after work and they are the most adorable little furbabies ever, they have settled in well and already fight to sit on my lap.

They started sneezing on Friday so just to be on the safe side the cat rescue centre made an appointment to the vets who prescribed them antibiotics which seem to be working well.

So I would like to say thank you for allowing me to join this forum

Hi and welcome to TCS! Many condolences on the loss of Ebony. Losing a pet is always hard but I imagine especially so when it's a sudden tragic accident like that.

Wellington and Tinker sound adorable. We love pictures around here (hint, hint).

Thank you , the pain of losing Ebony is easing each day . The kittens both have ac cold/flu and are both on antibiotics to prevent infection , the vet said this virus is common with adoption cats , but they are otherwise really healthy . They are as good as gold and already fight to sit on my lap lol, Wellington is twice the size of this sister who is so petite . My son takes lots of pictures so there will be more of them :)

Hi 2littlerascals. Your 2 little kits certainly do look like rascals, they are gorgeous, and HOW FLUFFY is Wellington?!   They look like one big ball of fluff all curled up together... I am so glad they are getting along well and helping you fill the hole in your heart that has been left by Ebony. I too struggle to be in my home without a cat and don't think I started to heal after I lost the second of my 2 previous 'girls' until I got another furbaby. I hope that Wellington and Tinker's sneezes are getting better.

Hello, yes they are very mischievous when they are not full of cold. They haven't eaten anything today and i hid their medication in their food but its now gone to waste , i am hoping they will eat their medication in the morning when i put a fresh one in some tuna for them

I just took them in the bathroom with steam to try and unblock their nasal passages , i really want them to get well so they can flourish .

Any suggestions please ?

Oh, that is such a shame.  Really important to keep them eating and getting fluids as you will know, and it is great that you are trying to help them with steaming in the bathroom. I would look for an alternative to putting the antibiotic in their food ASAP if it's reducing their food intake as they're probably feeling grotty and off food just now anyway.

How old are Wellington and Tinker, they still look pretty young?  Also, how are they for being handled, are they very wriggly and scratchy or reasonably trusting and relaxed?

Has your vet given you tablets, and can they be crushed? I am assuming so if you have tried hiding it in their food.  You can get a little gadget for giving tablets to pets that places the tablet right at the back of their throat. You then you can hold them with mouth closed and very gently stroke until they swallow but if they are little and getting distressed I'm not sure how I would feel about this.

I haven't had to give medications to kittens as small as yours but I am sure many other people on this site will have loads of experience and suggestions for you. I usually powder tablets down if I can and then give on a bite proof teaspoon followed by a quick food treat as soon as it's swallowed (or if it's sticky liquid wipe a little on their lips as they try to lick the medication taste away).  I would certainly ask the vet if there is an alternative to tablets though if you have a problem getting them to take the meds.

Do you know if the vet can get the antibiotic changed to a liquid formula as then you could to give them through a syringe and it's not so hard to get them to swallow? It might be a bit less distressing for them but can get sticky for you!

Let us know how you get on.

They are 16 weeks , both have been up and about today jumping on furniture so not lethargic . Tinker just ate a huge bowl of food left a bit in the bottom so i hope the tablet was there somewhere . Wellington is a few days behind Tinker in catching the virus so he is off his food as was Tinker on Monday, I will try them both again tomorrow with their medication crushed up in food they are usually really hungry first thing in the morning so i will see how they are.

There is a big difference in their size, Wellington is twice Tinkers size and she is having a half of a tablet twice daily, while Wellington is having one and a half tablet once daily, their  eyes are runny but it is a clear discharge, they sneeze but i think it is getting less, they just seem really stuffed up today and breathing through their mouths .

They have been using their litter tray so no problem there, i have left fresh water out for them but they dont touch it thats why i have started them on wet food to keep them hydrated .

Back at the vet Friday with Tinker  so hopefully they will be much improved :)

And they'll keep growing! :)

If they're not picking up and you want more advice I think it might be better for you to start a new thread for your little guys in the Health Forum so you all get the advice and attention possible.  Good luck though, it sounds like Tinker is starting to get over the worst of it so fingers and paws crossed here that they'll both be back up to no good very soon!

Hi, I see you've started a new health post. I hope things go well and your little guys pick up. You are doing everything you can and it must be really hard when they're so little. Hope to see more happy kitten posts soon. Good vibes for you all.
