Hello all !Could someone confirm the frequency we should be treating our kittens for fleas/worms as there seems to be conflicting info surrounding this! The lady we adopted from said she had deflea-ed and dewormed prior to us collecting them last month, however when we took them to the vets they found a flea and gave them a pipette each. They are indoor cats but we do now take them into our garden on leads for an hour or so most days.We have two flea pipettes left from the vets but nothing to deworm. Is that something we should just have the vet do next year when we take them for their annual jabs?Neither of them are scratching incessantly at all, and we haven't had any flea bites on our skin. I'm not sure what symptons of worms I should be looking out for though and worry about us catching them as the kittens do like to sleep up close to our faces at night if we let them!We are in the UK so best brand suggestions for OTC treatments would also be appreciated! Many thanks in advance for the help!:)

The "spot--on"  type flea treatment  is usually done monthly,  at least during months when there's a risk of fleas.      If you dont have them in the house  it may be possible to skip it in cold winter months

Actually I think Revolution and Advantage Multi  are against roundworms too as well as fleas.

De-worming  ,  well there should be at least  2 treatments given 2 or 3 weeks apart.

Then after that ,  how much it is really needed depends on the likelihood of getting worms.  Some people with indoor / outdoor cats who kill and eat prey ,  deworm  maybe 3 times a year.

Symptoms of worms would be the cat eating but not gaining weight, having very stinky poop ,  being thin but with a bloated belly,   and obviously if you see worms coming out in the feces , or if the cat vomits a worm!

Are you in the UK?  If so, call the vet and ask what they recommend for the worms.  I know here in the States, we have Revolution that treats both fleas and worms, but I'm not sure that's available in the UK.

If your cat is an indoor cat I would not recommend using a monthly treatment unless your cat shows signs of fleas. Here is a good article on flea treatments and when and if to use them (http://healthypets.mercola.com/site.../03/31/dangers-of-flea-and-tick-problems.aspx). As you do take them outside you ay want to try some natural treatments and like maewkaew said if you do use the spot on treatments just use them in the summer months.

As for worms I think it is often a good idea to get a stool test done because the general deworming meds do not treat coccidia and giardia which are also pretty common in cats.

Thanks for the help everyone! I intend to have a thorough check for fleas this evening with them both although I think I would have noticed by now if we had a problem. I have two extra pipettes of flea treatment from the vet if needs be. I will speak to the vet regarding the worming treatment, I checked back over my correspondence with the lady from whom we adopted the kittens and she said they had been defleed and wormed "recently" (5 months old at adoption - brought home with us 27th July).
