my black cat is about 13yrs old and diabetic(gets blood glucose tested twice a day and two insulin shots) lately he has been ravenious...my vet check his blood values and said both his ast and alt are 5000 (yes thousand) and that the cat will die, but except for being always hungry, he seems to be ok...any insight into what we can try to bring down the high numbers? thanks

Hi and welcome to TCS!

I am sorry about your kitty. Firstly I would really think about going to another vet because just telling someone a cat will die is pretty unhelpful. I have not had to deal with elevated liver values in my cats but my 17 year old dog does have elevated liver values. From doing research for her most of what I have read indicates that the treatments for cats and dogs are the same. What I am doing to treat my dog is giving her milk thistle and SAM-e. I give her hepato support which is for both cats and dogs (http://www.drugs.com/vet/rx-vitamins-hepato-support-can.html) and a SAM-e supplement which again is for both cats and dogs.

There is some debate on whether animals with high liver values should go on a low protein diet which is how most of the prescription vet foods are formulated. After reading a lot on the subject I decided against putting my dog on a low protein diet or the prescription diet and I give her high quality canned and raw food.

My vet said one of the big things to watch out for is urinating a lot and to bring her in if she does. He said not to worry too much if she is acting normal and I am going to keep getting her tested every few months to keep an eye on the numbers.

Was his thyroid checked? Just a thought because whenever I hear ravenous, I think possible hyperthyroidism.
