Hello all,

I'm new here and I just found this website, so I figured I'd give it a go. Quick summary: I have two beautiful 5 year-old Tonkinese cats that I rescued about a year ago, and they're basically my children (which I'm sure you can all understand). About two weeks ago, I found one of them lying in the living room having trouble breathing, drooling, and when I tried to pick her up, she just collapsed. She had been completely fine just three hours beforehand when I was playing with her and taking cute pictures. I rushed her to the kitty ER, they saw tons of fluid in her lungs on the x-rays, so they treated her for two days with oxygen and diuretics. They suspected electric shock, but said it could also be heart failure. I took her to my normal vet for a follow-up the next week, and she was doing better, but they wanted me to keep her on the diuretics until the cardiologist appointment (on 9/3), because they suspected HCM.

Last night, she was having some trouble breathing again, so I put her back on the higher dose of the diuretic that she was on when she came home from the ER, because I couldn't reach my vet, and the ER vet said over the phone that she would probably have to be treated again, which I just can't afford... I've already spent $1,200 on her in the past two weeks, and I'm only 22, and just starting grad school, so I'm broke broke broke. But anyway, this morning, after putting her on the higher dose, her symptoms haven't gotten any worse. She's behaving like normal, her breathing is just a little bit labored, and her purring sounds a tiny bit wet (kind of crackly?). I have them both in just one room right now, to try to limit her activity so she can't get her heart rate up too much. The cardiologist appointment isn't for another week and a half, but if she's showing the same symptoms, I'm afraid she might not make it that long. And if she does get a lot worse again, I just can't afford to have her treated again. And I'm afraid about how it'll affect her brother. When she was in the kitty ER for two days, it stressed him out so bad, he started scratching his fur off in a couple places, but he's went back to normal as soon as she came home. They've never been separated, while I've had them, anyway, aside from those two days when she was in the kitty ER.

I'm just wondering, if you were in my situation, what would you do? I'm looking into ways to afford treatment for her, if it comes to that, but if i'm unable to find a way, I'm trying to prepare myself for the possiblity of having to put her to sleep... Any advice?

Hello, I am a newbie too and know exactly how you feel as in the same boat - my ragdoll boy levi has just be confirmed with HMC :( Luckily he is insured and he is on meds but i am still worried sick and had to make the payout for treatment. Speak to the vet regarding a payment plan and see if you can spread the cost. I can't imagine how hard this must be.

When I brought levi home my other ragdoll thought he was a new cat as he smelled of the vet but in 1 day they were back to normal too. Cats see with their nose! Probably not what you want to hear but this condition can be genetic so and more common in male cat so i would also get your other one checked out asap for peace of mind - best to do before they show clinical signs.

I am sending positive vibes your way x

Try the search bar at the top.  HCM should get you lots of discussions.  I think altogether, the members here have seen it all.
