Hi, my name is Jenny and I recently adopted two cats from our local shelter.  This last July I had to euthanize my 16 year old Riley due to kidney failure.  After much thought I decided to get some new cats.  The house just seemed too quiet with no one to share it with.  I went to the local humane society looking for a new pal.  I wanted to find a cat that was between 3 to 6 because my youngest is going to college and there will be lots of hours the cat would be alone.  Plus I figured a more mature kitty would be less likely to get into as much trouble.  Trying to find that cat was sooo hard.  Our humane society has over 300 right now.  Every enclosure I went into there would be a new one I would like.  I narrowed it down and my daughter went on days I had to work and found 4 she really liked.  I set on Cadbury.  He is three and was brought to the shelter by someone who said his grandfather could not care for him.  He was extremely shy, but would slowly come out and be a real sweetheart.  He had been living in the shelter since Dec 2012.  Because no one would be there during working hours we decided to have two cats to keep each other company.  Because Cadbury was so shy we thought it best to pick another cat out of the same enclosure.  This time my husband fell in love with "Janet".  Before he even entered the enclosure she caught his eye ( and this is a man who tolerates my love of cats).  His deal was if I get Cadbury he gets Janet.  She was found as a stray outside the shelter.  Malnurished and full of flees and scabs, she is just over 1 and ALL kitten.

Now for some new info.  My previous cat didn't need much grooming but Cadbury has THICK short hair.. I was thinking the furmanator but I'm not sure.  He really sheds when you pet him and I'm sure grooming would help.  I assume more than one tool would be needed.  Help! we are all getting itchy eyes and would like to do whats best for him.

Thanks

Hi Jenny and welcome!

I have major allergies and swear by the furminator.. there are different ones for different coats, so just check what suits your boy.  I use it, a soft cat brush, and then wipe them down with a very slightly damp cloth to remove any loose hair.   Just use the furminator somewhere where you can collect all the hair in one spot as it really works and you don't want hair flying everywhere.

My cats just love being groomed.. I do it on top of my washing machine, and any time they see me heading that way they're there, waiting expectantly.   It's a lovely way to bond with your cat.

Hi, welcome to TCS!  I use a cat comb on Rue, who has short, thick hair.  I also use wipes especially made for cats on everybody.  They aren't fond of them (it sort of amounts to me chasing cats) but the wipes seem to do an amazing job of cleaning.
