Does anyone have a balanced recipe for a fish-based meal? I have wild salmon and ocean perch at home. My kitty might have an allergy to chicken, so I would like to incorporate these occasionally. I know that too much fish would be a bad idea, but I assume that once a week or so would be fine. I have been adding sardines to his food every once in a while, and he likes them.

Sardine in water a day is fine ... I have books with part fish recipes but NO vet that I work with and YES the one I work mainly  has a masters in animal nutrition will suggest a all fish diet ... Beef , venison , lamb, rabbit( a fave here ) and even pork THANK YOU LDG :)  are all common option s.... Elk , goat , ox and buffalo being other usually less common

Sharky, thanks for responding. I plan to try rabbit as soon as I have space in the freezer. I don't have a local source, so ordering in bulk online is my only option.

mschauer, thank you so much for the detailed information! I will keep in mind that the recipe isn't balanced. As you mentioned, it would be fine for a few times a month.

You're welcome! It has way too much water though. Don't know why I didn't notice that before I posted it.
  4 oz or how ever much to get the consistentcy you want would be fine.

i hope it's okay that i've added this here - please let me know if it should be somewhere else...  

i've been feeding this to my cats for a week.  it's a meld of two chicken recipes @mschauer  posted - one linked earlier in this thread and one here http://www.thecatsite.com/t/266872/home-cooked-for-crf-kitty  that's a low phos recipe with liver.  i did some adjusting for volume and i think i hit it pretty close.  i added 3 egg whites hoping to up the protein/mass without adding phos for a ckf/ckd kitty. 

5lbs chicken thighs, 1/3 with skin left on

4oz chicken livers

8oz chicken hearts

3 eggs, whole (cooked)

3 egg whites (cooked)

4000mg taurine

1/2tsp lite sale

1 capsule b-right complex

200iu dry vitamin e

5000mg small fish oil

5tsp eggshell powder

i cooked the thighs in a 9x13 pyrex tightly covered with foil.  i had an electronic meat thermometer hooked up and it didn't freaking beep when it was supposed to - i had it set to go off at an internal temp of 150F, and it didn't.  when i went to check it, it said 185F!!  i'm going to recalibrate it or replace it because i don't think the chicken was overdone; it was still moist and not browned at all, not even golden brown.  so i'm not sure what's up with that.  i also used a smaller pyrex dish, tightly covered with foil, to cook the livers and hearts.  i put a bit of water in the bottom of that dish and cooked it for about 25 minutes.  i lightly scrambled the eggs/egg whites.  

when the chicken bits were done, i put them in a bowl with cold running water to stop the cooking.  once they were cool, i started feeding everything through my kitchen aid grinder attachment.  i then poured all of the drippings from the thighs into a bowl and added in all of the supplements.  i mixed that up well and then added it to my ground chickeny mix.  it seemed a bit dry, so i poured in some of the drippings from the pyrex that had the hearts and livers in it.  i actually poured in about all of it.  it still wasn't super wet, but i like that - i add warm water to it before serving.  

i portion this out into freezer bags, 9oz each, and thaw one every day for my cats.  they get 1oz each, three times a day.  i feel like that's not enough calories for them, but they almost never beg for food and sometimes don't finish what we put down within 30 minutes.  i ended up with 8 bags of 9oz and 1 bag with about 7oz.  so that's food for eight and 2/3 of a day.  about 80oz total.  i did the math and with today's chicken prices, i paid $23.85 including tax - just under 30¢ an ounce.  i was feeding wellness and nature's variety canned at around 33¢-37¢ an ounce - but i used all-natural, vegetarian fed, no hormones or antibiotics chicken and chicken parts.  i mean i go through 9oz a day - that's 27¢-63¢ a day i save for a bit of my time - and i control what i feed them.

If you're talking about the recipe in post #4, it is without bone and uses eggshell instead.  I order my supplements online...she lists specific ones so if you Google the specs for each supplement you can find something at least comparable to the ones listed.  If not at WalMart, maybe a GNC or health food store? 

What are his symptoms?  Diarrhea, constipation?  I fed plain chicken until I was able to get the supplements (I feed raw).  You don't want to do that forever, but you can do this a couple of weeks.  Eggshell powder is super easy to make.

Thanks. He has weight loss diarhea and vomiting. I've been trying to find something that works since May. He was eating ground chicken and then starting refusing that so I tried deboned chunks of chicken and now the only thing he'll kind of eat is gizzards. I'm getting worried he's gonna end up with a deficiency if I can't find something he'll eat with everything he needs

Was he vomiting chicken?  Maybe rabbit is worth a try?  Most are going to be bone-in grinds, so no cooking...but does it need to be cooked?  I ask because bone really helped my diarrhea prone cats.  You can start a new thread on your kitties if need be, to get more individualized responses for your case.

Thanks No, anything commercial makes him throw up. He had one solid poop a few days after starting ground with bone, and organs.

Now he's back to having loose poops.

@mschauer    Hi, I'm making the cooked chicken recipe in this thread.  It is evident that my cats do not love cooked eggs so I would like to not include them in the recipe.  Each cat happily eats a raw egg yolk a week, balanced for calcium (1/32 tsp eggshell per large egg yolk), so I'm not worried about them missing the nutrients in the cooked eggs.  Question:  Do I need to adjust the supplements to account for the lack of three eggs in the recipe, assuming the meat portion remains the same?  At a minimum, should I reduce the eggshell in the recipe by 3/32 tsp?  Thanks!

Nope, no need to adjust the supplements. As is except without the eggs the Ca:p would go from 1.2:1 to 1.3:1 which is fine in my book. If you want to keep the Ca:p as 1.2:1 then decreasing the eggshell by 3/32 tsp will indeed accomplish that.

If I minimally cook the chicken in the oven. Say, 30 minutes. Will it be adequate for an FIV kitty?

I feed my FIV+ kitty raw food. He's never had an issue and is completely thriving. I worked with a holistic vet to get him healthy when he was rescued (he had horrible diarrhea we couldn't stop with anything). She's the one that suggested raw, and one of the reasons I feed raw.

I have three FIV+ cats in the feral colony - they hunt and are doing fabulous. (Knock wood).

I don't know if 1/2 an hour is a short amount of time. You might do better by searing it, the way Dr. Pierson does. As she explains, the potential bacteria is on the outside of the food, so there's no need to cook the inside at all. http://www.catinfo.org/?link=makingcatfood (Her recipe is for ground - no idea if you're planning to provide it chunky or ground, but the principle is the same).

The more "raw" you can leave it, the less nutrient damage there is. Also - please ensure that if you're including bone, it isn't cooked at all.

I currently have Sebastian on a rotational diet in which I feed one single protein for three weeks before moving on to the next protein. He currently gets 70% canned and 30% home-cooked (always a matching protein) supplemented with Balance It. His menu includes rabbit, pork, turkey, beef, and duck. I'd like increase the amount of home-cooked food he gets and also see if I can start adding the individual supplements myself - whatever is needed after using meat, liver/organs and a calcium source (eggshell calcium or MCHA). I see that Hare Today has matching livers for every protein in Sebastian's rotation (for rabbit, they sell "rabbit organs" together).

It looks like there are three recipes in this thread that I could use.

The rabbit recipe from post # 12

The pork recipe from post # 18

The simplified beef recipe from post # 25

So here are my questions and observations:
  1. @mschauer, would you be able to help me develop two more recipes using 1) turkey and turkey liver and 2) duck and duck liver, to complete Sebastian's rotation schedule? I suppose if those livers aren't available options in your program, then we may have to fudge?
  2. After reading through other questions/answers on this thread, it seems I am able to omit the egg in these recipes without it affecting the overall nutritional value too much. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I know LCat4 already asked this, but he/she does feed an egg yolk weekly. Sebastian gets no eggs ever.
  3. Fat content is a concern. Sebastian has chronic pancreatitis and, as he gets older, he seems to be more sensitive to too much fat in his diet. How much is too much I am not certain, but I do know that based on canned foods, he does well on a very low fat canned food with 14% fat DMB and got a tummy ache eating a canned food with 30% fat DMB. I see the nutrient analysis that accompanies each of the three recipes referenced above. It seems they are all relatively low in fat. I am reading this correctly? Could I choose a lean meat and trim fat to balance out the fattiness of the liver without compromising nutrients?
  4. Let's say I decide to eliminate canned food and feed Sebastian 100% home-cooked food. This would mean he gets the same food for three weeks straight. Do you foresee any problems with this when the recipe is not exact (i.e., when eggs are omitted, additional pork meat is substituted for pork heart in the pork recipe, rabbit organ blend is used in place of chicken heart and liver in the rabbit recipe, etc.). I am uneasy about the possibility of nutritional deficiencies (or excess).

I'll give a partial answer now. A full response will have to wait a day or 2. 


1) Yes.

2) Eggs add a lot of vit D which can otherwise be hard to come by in a raw recipe.

3) If fat is a concern you might want to reconsider the duck. It is 44% higher in fat than chicken thighs.

4) That sounds OK.

I'll elaborate further when I can...
