Ive seen him twice.  First time he was in their shelter  - ran out.  Today he didnt move while I came towards him - 6 cats were behind me like a gang ready to fight and he ran off - before swatting a sleeping cat nearby.   I actually thought it was funny - the cat didnt seemed bothered by it.

What really worries me though is he came back while I was still feeding.   It was dusk and I dont have any reason to think he's sick.. just hungry and the cats certainly dont mind.

Is there anything to worry about concerning me or the cats?  He really is the biggest one Ive ever seen and Ive been feeding in the same area for 4 years.  Not sure if he would be new to the area or just coming round earlier since its getting darker now.

thanks

We had a lenghy tread about this not far ago.  Most witnessed there was seldom big problems, they could coexist nearby.

But we agreed it was not without some dangers: some participants had real problems and warned strongly. In other cases the deaths of crushed kittens were mostly an unfortunate accident.

It may possibly depend on the individual raccon in question, some are more aggressive than others.

I have a friend who had a raccoon at his house. It would eat the cats food and the cats would sit there with no problem. Then one night he heard one of his cats screaming. The raccoon was after it. The cat ran up a tree but the coon followed it. He was going to shoot the raccoon but couldn't get a clear shot without shooting his cat. He had to listen to his cat being killed. The raccoon actually ate the rear end off the cat. I don't know if it's common for them to do that. He doesn't know if it was the same one that had been eating the cat food, but he did trap it. I used to think they were so cute, but since that happened I'm afraid for one to be anywhere near my cats. Just be careful and keep a close eye on the kitties.

I do my best to try and keep the racoons away from the cats food.  If the racoons come earlier than expected, I gather up the food and bring it inside.  After a few days, the racoons usually leave as there is no food available.  It's a pain to keep an eye out, but once they find a food source it is so hard to get rid of them.  My cats seem to coexist with the racoons, but that being said, a hungry raccoon might turn on a cat.  I know that feeding stations can be built up high so that only the cats can jump onto them.  Raccoon can't jump, but they can climb.  The feeding station had one middle support.  You can google it and find pictures.

Right now our neighborhood is having a problem with skunks.  The babies born in the spring have all matured and their stinker release is quite trigger happy!  One of my neighbors decided to try and trap them with the help of Critter Control.  I did tell him to watch for my cats.  I doubted my cats would go into a trap baited with marshmallow, but you never know.  So far he hasn't caught any skunks, but he did get a raccoon and ground hog.  The skunks don't bother my cats or the cat food, but the raccoon is a pain.  So now maybe I have one less.

I used to have a skunk that came and ate my dogs food. It never bothered the cats or the dog. I think they knew to keep their distance!
