Okay, I have a bit of a dilema.  My Maine Coon was to be spayed in June but 2 days prior to her appointment she ran off through the doggy door and ....her kittens are now 2 weeks old.  UGH.  I would like to be able to find responsible owners for these 5 kittens but am not finding a good place to post them for adoption.  I certainly dont want to use craigslist and I dont just want to hand them out to just anyone who comes along.  Sarabi, the mama, is now cooped up until her next spay date!  Any information on a good place to put the kittens up for adoption would be appreciated.

Thank you

Welcome to The Cat Site.

Yeah, an "oops" !

And double yeah, Craigs List and even Pet Finder, you need to use with extreme caution and care.  But with some half-way decent common sense, you can weed out the scammers and sadists from the true furball lovers.

These kittens can't be pure bred Maine Coons (unless you know who the pappa is) but you can appeal to the group who love the traits of MC.  Emphasize personality, include pictures (side view of face, more 'active' and interesting that way) of the kittens.

For ads you do post, request/require an 'adoption' fee which will go towards your local SPCA or rescue group.  You can request references from their vet.

The best source I found to adopt out cats is where you work or where a friend/spouse works.  My twin sister works for a large government agency, and she posted ads on her firm's intranet.   Of course, word of mouth works too.

The local SPCA/Humane Society are probably inudated with kittens, but you might also call them for advice, indicating you have some cats who are partial MC.

People being who they are, you can't 'require' them potential owners to guarantee they will get the kittens spay/neuter.  (Or, are you going to take care of that beforehand?)  You might be able to get coupons for low cost s/n, depends on where you live.

Good luck!
