I took my kitten Mike to the vet Monday for her second round of vaccines, and brought her dirty ears to the dr's attention. Sure enough, she has ear mites. He gave me Advantage Multi for both the kitten and my 8 yr old cat at home. He also gave me a salicylic acid ear wash (once/day for a week, once a week after that) and tresaderm (twice/day for two weeks.) I've already treated both kitties with the Advantage Multi, and I'm taking care of Mike with the drops and wash. I suppose I coupld take Missy in just to verify that she has ear mites, but they've been in close proximity to one another for about a month, so I should just assume that she does, right? I've spent about $800 at the vet the past six weeks after my cat Milo's passing, so I'd rather not drop another $100 just to find out something I already know. My older cat Missy definitely doesn't like to be held, so treating her with drops and the wash will be more traumatic than it is with the kitten. Does anyone have experience with treating mites with just a topical flea/multi treatment? I will probably buy a few more months of doses of the stuff to be safer.

also, this most recent appointment we verified that my little boy cat Mike is actually a girl, just to explain the gender name confusion. I'm so used to calling the kitten Mike, I doubt we're going to change the name. :)

Ear mites are pretty contagious, so I would just assume Missy has them although you should see some evidence. I believe the Advantage multi treats ear mites, so I'm not sure why you also need Tresaderm and the ear wash. I also would be careful about over treating beyond what your vet recommended, but I tend to be very cautious with pesticides/insecticides.

Mikey's ears were pretty grody, which would explain why the vet was more aggressive with treatment for her. I've seen Missy scratch at her ears here and there, but not in a frequency I'd ever be concerned with. Mikey never seemed bothered with her ears either, until I started with the drops! Thanks, I won't be so worried about treating (torturing) Missy since she got the multi tx.
