Hi! I am so glad to find this group!  Long story short, my roommate and I took the neighborhood stray to a TNR clinic. The clinic volunteers convinced us to give him a new indoor home, especially as winter is coming soon.  We quickly converted our garage into a kitty quarantine, spending close to $100 in a rug, scratching post, cat bed, dome cat bed, and various toys.

He has spent the majority of his time (4 days now since his trapping and neutering) in a cardboard box, coming out to eat or use the litter box only when no one is in the room (we can watch through a screen door).   We've read to him and tried to coax him out, but no luck.  Today, I spent at least 15 minutes with a toy that he finally grabbed with his paw...but only when I moved it into the box with him.  Then, he curled up to go back to sleep.

Is it normal for a trapped stray to sleep so much?  Has anyone heard of this as a fear response?  I worry that over the long haul, it's going to be difficult to coax him into participating in household life.   We do have 4 other cats, including 2 young boys that have already expressed interest in wanting to meet him.  Has anyone had luck with strays being rehabilitated by current cats?

He has a vet visit this Saturday and will do a full workup of tests.  I am very nervous about FIV because of the 4 other cats. Fingers are definitely crossed.   Before we trapped him, he was somewhat friendly - would beg at the front door for food and gradually permitted petting on his back while eating.  Otherwise, he was skittish of hands and movement.  The TNR clinic told me he's about 5 years old and I've now realized he was probably dumped.  People are cruel.

I'm going to read the previous threads to get as much help as I can. This is all new to me!

Thanks!!  (here's a pic)

Just read the "Took in a Semi Feral Cat" thread and was glad to see a lot of helpful advice.

I'm actually feeling much better about things working out - it just might take a lot longer than I prefer.

Still, I'd love to hear any advice people have to share.

Thanks!

Your kitty is adorable.  I love his different color eyes!  In my experience having my semi-ferals see another cat interacting positively with me really seemed to help the socialization process.  It seemed to give them cues that I was ok.  Your interactions so far seem really positive and I am sure he will come around given some time.

Cats move at their own pace.  It will take awhile for him to adjust to his new surroundings.  I would try playing soft music.  I use some pet harp music which my animals all love.  Composure treats or liquid help to calm the cat.  Feliway diffusers or spray are another option.  The magic for me has always been Gerber stage 1 baby food in chicken or turkey.  Cats go crazy for it.  You can coax him out with the food and see if he will eat it off of a spoon or on a small plate near you.  Spend 10-15 minutes many times a day with him so that he gets used to you.  You can talk to him about your day or read allowed from a book/magazine.  It will help him recognize your voice.

It is wonderful of you to rescue this cat.  It may take awhile, but with patience it can be done.

We had a foster who took two steps forward and three back almost every day.  Then one day, she took three ahead and two days later, only one back!  It takes time and patience.  Sounds like you have both.  Thank you for helping him.

I love odd-eyed kitties.

We left the classical station playing for him today and are leaving the garage door open (locked screen door and a baby gate to keep our cats from getting too close). Will try the baby food idea too. Am afraid we will take a step back when we bring him to the vet, but it is very important that he is tested, given more vaccines, and treated for fleas/parasites. Our young boys are eager to meet their new family member.

UPDATE : He used his carrier as a napping place so all I had to do was shut the door to bring him to the vet today. Yesterday he started to come out of his shell, begging to come out of kitty quarantine to meet our two young boys and rubbed against me. I really am thinking he was someone's pet that just needs to re socialize. The vet had to anesthetize himas he was so terrified. The good news is he is FIV free. The bad news is he is now in a cone because his neuter site (TNR clinic a week ago) is infected. So... He's back to not speaking to us and coned for at least a week. We are very glad to have given this little guy a home and confident that he'll eventually come around to being a spoiled house cat.

So glad you got him to the vet for tests and he is healthy!  Too bad about the neuter site.  Good thing the vet caught it, but bad on having to wear a cone for a week.  I am sure he hates it!  Hopefully his adjustment will be easy peasy from here on out!  Thanks for the update.

No...he is not enjoying the cone.  I am definitely affirmed that we did the right thing by keeping him - I'd be devastated if his neuter site infection went untreated and something happened to him.  He is back to living in the cardboard box and giving us dirty looks.  I am positive he will come around and have already bought some Gerber food to try.  Thanks for the tips!

Cute cat!
Yes cats will become best buddies in time. It does take time but I've seen it happen many times. If you have a large kennel big enough for cat, litter pan, food/water. Use a long handle back scratcher, the ones that look like hand. You can put a little can food on it so after licking it you continue to pet the cat. After the cat gets vaccinated and a clean bill of health let your cats gradually start socializing with him.
Good luck!
