I know a lot of people here use the NOW brand of krill oil. I wondered if anybody has tried a different brand? I heard the Nature Made brand is milder in taste.

I just ordered Mercola Krill Oil in the pump bottles, but it hasn't arrived yet.  I got tired of cutting open the capsules and wasting some, plus think the NOW recently had a pretty big price increase, and Mercola's was on sale

It should be here any day, so I can let you know what the cat's think, since currently only one of mine really likes it.  If Darko doesn't put up too much of an objection, then that must mean it's less "odorous"

Well, the Mercola Krill Oil arrived, and Darko really likes it! Tinky doesn't care for it, so not sure what that means
, as he really likes the Now Krill Oil. I will say that the Mercola doesn't have as much mg of Krill per "pump" as the NOW, even though one pump appears to be about the size of a capsule of NOW, so all in all, I think the NOW may end up being a much better deal.  It would take 5 pumps to equal the same amount of mg of Krill Oil in one capsule of Now, but the dosage of Mercola is 1 pump for a cat.  And they say 1 pump per 10 lbs for dogs. Five pumps is a LOT!  I tried 2 pumps just because Tinky used to really like the NOW, and he refused to eat his food with 2 on there.  Even with 1 pump I have to use lots of toppers
.  So...my review would not be favorable.  Hmmm, perhaps I should DO a review

yes, it's plastic, at least it appears to be.  But so far it seems to always pump the same amount (except for the very first time), and it appears to be about the same amount that I am able to squeeze out of a NOW capsule.  But it's only 50 mg per pump vs 250 in one NOW capsule
, which is rather disappointing.  But it's sure a lot more convenient

50 mg? Wow. Well, thanks for letting us know. I probably wouldn't be able to get 5 pumps into Poppy, she's very particular about her oils.

Where are you getting 250mg NOW capsules? I could only find 500mg. Right now I puncture the capsule, squeeze out about half, and then take the rest myself since I don't have other kitties. That's how I plan to evaluate the taste of the Nature Made I ordered - by first hand experience!

You'll have to let us know, because Flowerbelle hates the NOW krill. :lol3:

...and I have my answer on the pump. Mine doesn't dispense anything now. :( What a PIA.

Ooops!  My mistake.  The NOW is 500 per capsule.  I was thinking since a serving (for humans) was TWO, that 1 capsule was 250 mg (sorry, have been drugged up lots lately for migraines
)  Gosh, that makes the Mercola even worse.  Guess I'll need to put at least one pump into every meal for the kits.  But I don't want them to gain weight from it

Laurie, the pump on this bottle is not like a normal pump, since it's airless.  I would take a picture, but my PC is on the fritz so I am using a backup and not too familiar with it so not sure how to load pictures to it.  If you sent a pix of YOUR bottle, I could verify if it's similar to mine.  But with the small amount of Krill, not sure you'd want to order anyway.  BUT, on the otherhand, Darko really dislikes NOW Krill, and he really goes after the Mercola, so maybe Flowerbelle would like it?

Those of you waiting for my first-hand report on krill oil will have to be a little more patient. The Nature Made came, but I noticed that the reason it tastes milder is because it has ethyl vanillin in it! So I am on the hunt again for a kitty suitable krill oil.

Other kitty mommies and daddies - Please learn a lesson from my experience - If you are supplementing with human supplements, check the ingredients, including the inactive ones. Make sure there are no other additives or at least ones that don't harm kitty. I've done a quick scan and different krill oils have maltitol, sorbitol, vanillin, other vitamins which could lead to overdose, etc. in them. Same goes for other vitamins and supplements.

OK, my order of Nature's Way came in.

I got out one capsule NOW krill oil and one capsule Nature's Way. I gave half each to Poppy and tasted the other half. The first thing I noticed abut the Nature's Way was that the capsule is much harder. The NOW brand is soft and pliable, but the Nature's Way is stiff. It did take more force to puncture the capsule, and it was much harder (but not impossible) to squeeze out.

The Nature's Way did taste milder, though. The NOW actually made me cringe and almost triggered a gag reflex. While not pleasant, the Nature's Way was tolerable.

If all other things are equal, I'll seriously consider going with Nature's Way over NOW, especially if I become more accustomed to the capsule stiffness and can figure out how to squeeze the oil out easier.

Carolina was using krill oil caps that were hard. She used (uses?) a needle and pliers. :lol3:

Thanks for letting us know. I get around the taste problem by splitting the dose across the three meals.

ETA: I remember reading someone posted that they use a thumbtack to puncture the capsule. Might be worth a try?

 Thanks for the suggestions.

I think using pliers might make it hard for me to keep a grip on the capsules since they're small. I did try the thumbtack way once and didn't like it at all. I have a few knives with pointy ends that I favor.

I did mix up the two krill oils in Poppy's food, but there were no problems with her eating it. I'll report back if feeding problems develop - sometimes with Poppy she'll give things a try for 2-3 meals then decide "no."

Trust me, pliers work!
I use Stainless steel so you can wash and put it in the dishwasher - they won't rust.
I still use them with the NOW brand, so I can take ALL the contents from inside - I give my cats 500mg /day.

I am not home, but I am pretty sure this is the one I have: Stainless Steel Pliers

To puncture it, very thick needles from the vet

WE got some Everest Krill Oil (for us humans), and those capsules are large, clear, and hard, but I can see that they aren't full, so I used scissors and actually cut the top completely off and just drained the capsule into Tinky's bowl once when I wanted to see how he would do with it.

As a side note, I also contacted the company and complained about their capsules and said the main reason I went with Krill Oil was to get away from the big fish oil capsules, and since I could plainly see that their capsules were not full, why did they use them versus the smaller caplets like everyone else?  You know what they said?  Nothing!  They never responded.  How rude.  So, I will not be buying any more from them.

Mine arrived last week, my six seem to eat it in their wet food with no problem. I hope it's worth the price.

Follow Up: I've ordered a new bottle of NOW. While I could taste a difference in the Nature's Way, the capsule casing was significantly harder than the NOW brand, and I'm getting less krill oil because I can't work it out of the capsule as easily.

If anyone still wants to use the harder capsules, I've found that warming it up in your hands does help.

I'm lucky--Poppy just eats it mixed in with some food. She likes it better if it's seafood flavored food, but I buy a 3 oz. can and only give her 3/8 oz. seafood flavored food with krill oil. Why she accepts krill oil and not some of the other stuff I try to give her is beyond me.
