One of my cats has had an ear infection for 2 years....One of my vets gave ear drops..malotic-genotic B-O...The other vet gave allergy pills...they both help but neither has cured the problem...I'm afraid the allergy pills dehydrate...Any sugestions..

Two years is a long time. Ear infections are usually a secondary condition. That means they are actually the result of some other underlying medical problem.

Has your cat's ear been thoroughly looked at, either under sedation or from an x-ray, for a foreign body or polyp? Has your cat been tested for ear mites, feline leukemia, diabetes, and FIV? Have they done an ear cytology (swab)?

Cats with diseases that compromise the immune system are more prone to ear infections. Allergies - not just environmental allergies, but food allergies, as well - can cause ear infections.

It's important to nail down what's causing the ear infection, rather than just treating the symptoms.

I agree with you...I asked my vet to take an XRay...She said it wouldn't show anything...I think I'll try a different vet..thanks for the info....They have done all the tests...He doesn't have any of the problems you mentioned...Fiv, diabetic, luekemia etc. It scares me because he had some black come from an eye...I put an antibiotic in the eye for 2 days and it hasn't come back...

I had a cat who had ear infections off and on for a couple of years.  The vet finally did a thorough clean out of her ears and send off some of the stuff to the lab.  Found out she had a yeast infection in her ears!  None of the drops or meds she had been taking really addressed that.  He ended up putting her on a daily antihistamine (Claritin 1/4 to 1/2 a tablet once daily) and putting this goopy gel like med in her ears that reached all the way down to her eardrum.  It was absorbed over a 2 week period.  It worked like a charm!  If you'd like I can find the name of the medication for you.  I would definitely ask the vet to culture the ear stuff to see what you're dealing with first.  Then, look at diet and consider adding the antihistamine.

My Shadow has ear problems.  I have doctored her ears with a mix of aloe vera and bee propolis and that has helped a lot.  Propolis has been shown to be anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal.  I used it to get rid of a post-surgical infection with good success.  I've read that its anti-parasitic but couldn't find much about that.

The vet did a flush on the ear that had a rupture...He was able to cure the ruture with a medication...Now the other ear is getting black debris. I thought he was going to flush both ears while the cat was under but he didn't...This vet is supposed to be the best in our area but I think I'll try another...Daze does have a heart murmmer.
