Hello all! I just had a quick question about my kitten. I got him last week at only 6 weeks old. I know that is very young, but the people who had him and his siblings said they were on their way to the kill shelter. Our "shelter" puts kittens down if they aren't old enough to be fixed right away, so I said I would take one rather than it just being put down. I've had cats my whole life but never this young.

The people I got him from said he was weaned and eating hard food and using the box. He does eat both soft and hard food and use the box just fine, but he's also still trying to nurse. He is 7 weeks and 2 days today, and I have a very nice crotchet blanket on the couch that is now the kitten's favorite sleeping place. I noticed a couple days ago that when he's getting ready to go to sleep on the blanket, he now spends a few minutes suckling it and trying to nurse on the blanket. Is this normal? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! :)

Yes it's common for kittens like him who are weaned early. My kitten did it at 8 weeks when I got him and still does it before he goes to sleep even though he is two now. Unless the kitten is swallowing parts of the blanket I wouldn't worry about it. It's just his way of comforting himself
.

Some people call it smurgling. There is a thread on here about it.

My Mom's cat Olivia still does it at 8 years of age! She also lays with her back legs out behind her when she does it and kneads the blankets just purring away!  I think it's cute!
