Thankyou  for taking charge and helping all of us out who are concerned about the wild calling cat food. You were the brave one to actually do research on this new food. I too have tried all types of food to feed my 4 plus cats. They hate the Hounds and Gatos, but will be mixing it with Weruva's  steak frites or something, or donating the rest of the cans to the cat shelter. I ordered a case of the wild calling, the chicken variety and it is a big hit with my cats, and i will continue to buy the wild calling in the different flavors, thanx to you for having the balls to really find out what,s going on since Evengers [;ant cans it. Too bad other people are reluctant to find out the real truth behind it. I can be more confident to buy this prouduct since they all love it. Thanx again for doing the hard work for all of us that were just assuming it was bad.

Real truth? I think it comes down to personal choice as to whether people are willing to serve this food, or not. I purchased Wild Calling a couple of times but threw it out on account of the look and smell. I wasn't about to serve something to my cats that looked and smelled like there was something wrong with it, but that's just my preference.

Regarding the information about the rust on the cans, no can should have rust on it. If it does, this suggests to me that the products were sitting too long in a warehouse and/or exposed to the elements. The cat foods in cans that I have seen in my local pet supply, all come packaged in a flat wrapped in plastic, for easy transport but also to protect the product.

I have been feeding Wild Calling to my cats for a little while now with great results! All 5 of them will chow it down, thank god!  I have really looked into this company and read everything on their website, anything i could find on the web and also anything about feline nutritional needs since i work in a vet's office and learning veterinary medicine. I am completely satisfied with this food and will continue to feed it to my cats. When you open up the cans the food looks and smells like something that would come out of my kitchen if i was cooking up cat food. Not  like the uniform mush that you are used to seeing in canned cat food! This is a new company and as off yet nothing horrible has come out about them. Much of the information I have about canning cat food states that there are limited facilities for this and unless it is Iam's or Purina or some other huge name you can't afford to have your own facility. In fact Orijen stated that they will not make wet cat food because it means that they would have to share a canning facility. Which is a shame because they make great food! Being a chef for the last 17+ years i have seen many things happen to cans of food and the contents have all survived it. Isn't that the point of canning? To protect the food from whatever may come it's way? A little bit of rust on the outside is nothing to worry about just wipe it off and keep going. As long as the integrity of the can is intact  everything should be fine! I have certainly never come across anything that would make me think otherwise. I would hate for someone new to feline nutrition or searching for a healthier lifestyle for their pet to throw out this brand for superficial reasons. But everyone must do their own research and find what is best for them and if they find something intrinsically wrong with the food please let us know! I will continue to keep a watchful eye on this company like i would any company that made the food i feed my pets and myself, and if anything is not up to  par i will be finding another brand!

It's good that your cats like the Wild Calling. That is the important thing.

I don't really care about uniformity or consistency of a food, in fact I wish pet food companies would remove the need for binders and such that go into making food look good in the can. The stuff I bought did not smell like anything that would come from my kitchen. If it did, I might be feeding this food, but two cans purchased on separate occasions had the same look and foul smell. That was enough for me to pass on this food.

Hi!!! Well I,m glad someone posted a positive review on this food. You are right, people that are new to the cat nutrition world know nothing about a good product if they fell with their nose in to it. I have a cat that is allergic to "caraneengan, and a lot of pet food companies add it to the food as a thickener. Caraneengan is a Bowel Irritant and did not know this until I did my own research. Fortunately, I was able to find a local pet shop who carries this food, and "raves" about this food and the company. She claimed that are a lot of people out  there who were being mislead about the food, nevertheless, I like it and my cats like it and I know it is a healthy food and that is all that matters!!!!

Just because others don't happen to share your opinion on this food, doesn't make them ignorant or uneducated about cat nutrition. Just the opposite in fact.

I prefer to feed Nature's Variety Instinct Grain-free wet canned to my cats. This is a premium high protein, low carb food that is one of the best foods you can buy. It doesn't contain carageenan, looks good and smells right. This is my opinion on this food but I don't expect everyone to share it. As I don't believe anyone has insulted you for your choice in feeding Wild Calling, I will thank you not to insult others for their choices.

I used to feed my cats Natures variety canned and some dry, until one of my younger males got a blockage. Fortunately, my vet, who treats cats only, was able to save him. She said that the blockage may of been from something in the food. Natures variety uses a type of "clay" as a binder to make their food. No insults here, but they also get their rabbit sources from China.  So if you intend on still feeding this food, I suggest you call the manufacturer and find out if they are still;; getting their rabbit from China, that is, if you feed the rabbit one. Good luck and sorry if I offended you.

I have called and emailed Nature's Variety, Wellness and Hound & Gatos to ask about a number of things. Of the response received from NV came the news that they will be switching their source of rabbit from China to New Zealand due to public concerns with products coming out of that country, and that the clay in their wet and canned food is a small amount.

I have three cats, two of which have never blocked or developed crystals. My younger cat was recently diagnosed with crystals through a routine UA. He had not blocked however, nor was he experiencing any difficulties with peeing. There can be different causes for crystals, including stress, which we believe may have been the cause in our case.

Good to know! I for one try to avoid foodstuffs from China as much as possible, for myself and for my pets.

I feed my cats Wild Calling. I haven't had any problems with the smell or how it looked. My cats love it.

I think they may have changed something in the recipe lately, or maybe I got a few weird cans as well. I bought a few when I first got Sadie and they were weird, the sauce (or whatever that stuff is) was really thick and looked really awkward, dark and sort of gloppy. And it did have a bit of a strange smell to it. I wasn't too keen on buying anymore, but I figured I'd give it one more shot and bought a couple more and they're completely different looking. It looks and smells great now, and I think I'm going to go back to buying it since Sadie seems to love it.

Thanks for the feedback Rhian. Glad to hear that it isn't just me who found this food off.
Good to know that the new stuff is okay - Which variety did you purchase this time?

I typically stick to the ones right about the $2 mark (which is pretty much my personal limit for a 5.5/6oz can right now) so I buy the chicken with an occasional beef thrown in.

Hmmm.
I didn't try the chicken as I feed some of this in other brands, but went straight to the Duck and Rabbit .. Perhaps worth taking a look at this.

Tried Cocheesie with the Wild Calling beef (Cowabunga) last week as she was showing less enthusiasm for the duck. The beef was a very moist pate (which tricked her into thinking it was gravy topped). Opened up a can yesterday and it had a number of big bits of clear chunks of something in it (gristle?). Picked out what I could see and tried it, because at this stage, I'm just happy if she eats anything. She turned up her nose. There was none in the 4 or 5 cans I bought last week and I don't have the old cans to check the batch number. The downside of recycling. Shall be emailing company over the weekend.

Also bought one can of bison for her to try but haven't opened it yet.

I tried the Bison/Beef/Lamb/Duck.   That's why I tried Wild Calling out in the first place.   They have some unique proteins.

My cat hated the Bison/Lamb/Duck and barely tolerated the Beef.

If my cat takes a break while eating, it's usually for a short period of time, i.e. 10 min. to 30 min. tops.

For Wild Calling Lamb or Bison, he wouldn't touch it period.

I'm of the thought that something is wrong with their foods as well.  Short of emailing 'Jerry' I think it is, what else can you do.  A shame really, considering the decent cost of the 13oz. cans.

Wow!! I am sorry to hear that about your cat not liking this food. You say that you bought the 13 oz cans? Only the dogfood comes in the  larger cans. The cat food only comes in the 5.5 oz cans. My cats love this food and I haven't had any issues with this food at all. Although I sometimes mix in the Weruva paw lickin chicken or another weruva variety except the fish variety, my cats inhale it!!! Maybe you can try mixing it in with one of Weruva's "paw lickin chicken or the Steak frites by Weruva. If you have a Petco locally, you can try the "soulistic brand made by the same company, but only the chicken variety. I spend a fortune on catfood but I feed only the best, and it avoids a lot of heartbreak when they have to go to the vet for food related problems. Since feeding grain free canned food only, my cats have  been in better health than ever. So please keep trying for your "Furbaby"

I will not feed Evangers products. I was really interested in them, until I learned that they switched meat sources, and  the company owners are criminals with multiple offenses.

I just do not trust that they will make a quality product.

Some more safety issues

http://www.poisonedpets.com/problem...d-in-merrick-dog-food-solution-silent-recall/

Bribing witnesses:

http://www.poisonedpets.com/owner-of-evangers-dog-cat-food-co-busted-for-trying-to-bribe-a-witness/

Your cat may not have any issues eating it, but why take an unnecessary risk? It only takes one can of bad food to kill your cat.  You can't sue, as cats are not worth anything, and evangers has enough money to put you in a financial pit.  That is assuming you can prove their food killed your cat.

The problem with food poisoning in pets is that the average person will not have the money to prove it and there are thousands of toxins that can kill your pet.

My dog died of acute kidney failure, and the vet laughed at me when I asked him to test for toxins... He said there are thousands of toxins and there is no way of knowing what it was that killed him. The necropsy was inconclusive other than showing his kidneys, liver and heart had damage.  I do wonder if it was the pet food, as he was on Diamond Pet foods, which also has a questionable history.  I still think that was what killed him, but I can't prove it.  I did find on Facebook, several other people who lost their dogs at the same time to kidney failure who fed diamond.

One person said their dog was on house rest, and there was no way she was exposed to anything other than the food. She spend thousands of dollars trying to save her dog but the damage was too severe.  My vet school did find a gram negative bacteria, which produces endotoxins, but they were unable to identify what specific bacteria it was.

A few batches of contaminated food can kill a few pets, and without proof, there will never be a recall. Proof is very difficult to come by, unless you are a millionaire and can test for everything.

I was buying the Wild Calling beef and salmon, my cats loved both. The food always smells and look good and so do the cans. The boutique store stopped carrying it and the owner said they sent over a batch of rusty cans, she called the company to complain and they apologized and sent her another batch, also rusty, so she stopped carrying the food. The store owner is super well informed on EVERYTHING from raw to cans to cat food and dog food and has a wide range of the higher quality foods. I had ordered a 2 cans from an online store about a week before(cans and food looked good) so I fed the last of it and I haven't purchased that brand again.

My cats love this food, I feel the price is reasonable and will continue to purchase.  I really don't have an issue with where it is canned unless it is out of the country.  Evangers supplies a large no kill shelter with food for the animals therefore it can't be all bad no matter what its history is because right now it is helping many homeless and unloved animals by donating food to this shelter.  I sometimes think people get caught up in issues that really don't have anything to do with the quality of the food - just my opinion, no need to rant at me about my opinion please.
