Mitu had a watery eye so I went to the vet with him. The vet said he has the herpes virus inside him so she gave him lysine for the rest of his life. At the beginning she said 2 spoons ( 500mg each) a day...then after 2 weeks 1 spoon a day. Thats what I did, and the first 2 weeks the lysine worked great, but as soon as I switched to 1 a day hes watery eye came back. Now I did an experiment and I notice he does better when he takes 2 spoons a day. I called the vet and she said that its ok to start giving him 2 a day...but I wanted to see, is there anyone else going thru this? How much does your cat take? Is lysine something bad for the cats, cat I overdose him? Is 2 spoons (500mg each) a day safe? Any advice or peace of mind will help a lot. Thank you guys...and also thank you everyone that answered my other question...I was unable to answer back because of some computer problems.

Are you giving the powdered variety of Lysine?  If so, 1/4 teaspoon equals approx 500 mg.  Normal dosing for maintenance is 500 mg daily.  It's best to give it twice a day so that the lysine stays in their system.  If the kitty is having a flare up, then the dose is 1000 mg daily.  Having said all that, I have a herpes kitty and she does best on the 1000mg a day every day.

Yes, is the powder lysine. When I give him only 500mg a day, I don't see results...but when I give him 1000mg his eyes get better right away. Is 1000mg to much?

In the box it has this tiny spoon that is 500mg...so one of those a day and I don't think is enough...2 a day and I can see a difference.

If you read through some other threads you will see that people do give 1000 mg a day for cats with herpes.

I give my cats 1000mg daily during a flare and 500mg daily for maintenance (always divided between AM and PM). I've read that too much l-lysine over the long-term can cause a depletion of arginine, an essential amino in cats, so I try not to over-supplement.
However, I think that you'll need to do what keeps your cat healthy.

I buy a human grade l-lysine powder from a local vitamin shop (it has no fillers) that has 1,000mg per 1/2 teaspoon, so I give 1/4 teaspoon twice a day during flares, and 1/8 teaspoon twice a day for maintenance in their wet food. It's real easy to measure out and adjust. I just use regular kitchen measuring spoons.

1000 mg a day is not too much.  That's what I give my herpes girl as she's like your kitty.  If I drop the dose down to 500 mg a day, she gets runny eyes and sneezes like crazy.  It's not pleasant for her or me to listen to her, so I stick with the 1000mg (500mg 2x a day).

Good luck with your kitty!

And remember, if the watery eye suddenly turns into a yellowish/greenish goop and/or if she starts squinting, then she should see a vet. They may need to treat her for a secondary bacterial infection.

It's very possible that the watery eyes and sneezing are from airborne allergens.  If the weather had changed recently, that could be causing it.  Just a thought.

He only has a watery eye, no green stuff. It also goes away when i give him 1000mg of lysine...so it is because of the herpes...but of course I always keep an eye on him to make sure everything is ok:) thank you all for the answers, they helped alot.

Most likely a flare up of herpes or airborne allergies, but watch him.
