I care for several feral cats ..the oldest tom was recently tnr.. Recently I've noticed that the fur on his back in one small round spot and a larger area on his lower back down to his tail is raised an inch above the rest of his fur..he seems healthy  except for some discoloration under his eyes...now occassionally he acts as though something is biting the area and he runs away and even vocalizes..I'v been giving him Capstar in case it is a flea infestation which hasn't seemed to work...Is it an infestaon of some sort or a skin condition or something else ?.

Hello, Guy.  Welcome to the forums.

Are the areas wet, bloody, crusty?  It could be an infection or perhaps he's been groomed by another cat - or is grooming himself too much?  I really can't visualize what it might be from the description.

As he has been recently TNR'd, is there a way you could get him back to the vet's?

Even if this isn't fleas, I would definitely continue the Capstar as having less fleas will help him in general.

Can you post a picture?  That would certainly help us "see" better and maybe have better suggestions.

Thanks!

With the dry skin, it may be flea allergies or another allergy.  What does he eat?  Dry food, especially the cheap stuff, sometimes has things that cat's don't tolerate well.

I would take him to the vet and let them determine if its something serious.

He looks healthy otherwise.  Beautiful markings!   I love his little nose.

We call him Blackie short for black nose. He eats a mix of quality dry and wet along with the occasional treats. In addition to the capstar he gets program once a month...will try to get to vet. We also care for his son BJ {Blackie Jr} who is the most affectionate of the seven thanks for your concern and help

He looks like a pretty big guy, do you think he's able to groom? Could that be mats? Sometimes the mats pull so badly that they react like they are being bitten. I had a new guy show up at a feeder last Dec., he was nothing but mats. At some point in his life his jaw was dislocated, bottom jaw completely shifted, no alignment with upper jaw so grooming is obviously difficult for him. I originally thought that he had some kind of crazy mange. He wasn't a feral and with a little time was comparatively easy to handle. Got him neutered and slowly but surely I was able to get the mats cut and brushed out, and some even just fell off by themselves. At one point in late spring the poor guy was mostly bald, but he's looking good now.
