Hey Ya'll! My name is Amber, I'm 24 and I live in California. I am also totally blind-which means that I cannot see people/colors/etc... only thing I can see is light in  my left eye but other then that, nothing else. I'm a huge country music fan, and I love going to country music concerts. Anyways, I just adopted a 2 year old Tabby from the Humain Society in my area. Her name is Sara and she is one of the cutest/sweetest things! :) :D  I just loooove her to pieces! :)   I just bought her home yesterday, in fact.  she was found as a stray, but she is very sweet. She hasn't been at the shelter that long, well well when she was there... anyways, today  she was letting me pet her, and she was constently purring, and just sleep most/if not all of the day on my bed. She even slept with me last night.  But  this evening we had a situation where since I live with my Mom, she is trying to get used to both my Mom and I, but since I'm with Sara all day everyday, she's gotten used to me the most. anyways, this evening they  told us yesterday that we should keep her to a confined space such as my room  until she feels comfortable with  the rest of the house, so that's what we've done. After a lot of worrying, from my part, she finally used the litterbox, with both peeing and pooping this afternoon which I was happy about. She's eating and drinking just fine, but  this evening, we kept the door  open because she has to ya know explore sometime, and since she was using the litterbox, Mom felt more comfortable  with her explooring the rest of the house. with that said, the door was left open, and Sara went  down a few stairs, and then kept going back and forth, then Mom picked her up and tried to just bring her down so she could exploor it, she wasn't  having any of that, and came right back in here and hid under the bed. Mom's boyfriend was over, and he kept trying to go in and pet her, and get her out from under the bed, and she wouldn't come, I even tried, and she came out, but only when I was in here with her by myself. Were taking her to the vet tomorrow for her exam or that was provided free from the  adoption phee.. but I just hope she comes out soon, cause I really didn't want to  scare her, but my Mom's boyfriend insists that I'm "babbying" her and that she's a cat not a human, etc... but I keep telling him that   she needs time... and he's like 'well, if it were me, I'd just go pick her up myself and just bring her down here...  but anyways, when I approach her under the bed, she purrs and stuff, and she came out a little while ago to drink her water, and then went right back under the bed... so I don't know... any of your oppinions/thoughts  are greatly appreciated! :) Thanks ya'll!! :)  Amber

Welcome to TCS, Amber!

Your instincts are right, meaning Sara should be allowed to settle in at her own pace, and it would be best for her if your mother's boyfriend left her alone to do it. The shelter stay was most likely upsetting to her, so she needs some babying to recover from the experience. She sounds like she's adapting to her new home and family rather quickly, actually. Some cats hide for days or weeks when taken to a strange environment.

Lots of luck to you!

All kitties need time to adjust :) She will come out in her own time. When I got Midnight she hid under the couch for 2 days. The third day she came out and plopped herself on my lap.

Hey Ya'll! thanks for the responces! We took Sara to the vet yesterday. She's still got the upper-respitory infection in her eyes that she left the shelter with, except they were giving her supliments, rather then treating the bacteria infection. So she has to take eye drops every 12 hours twice a day for about ten days or so. And she has also been sneezing, so they gave her an injection for that, too which should last about 2 weeks. I had somewhere to be last night, but when I came home, she came out from under the bed, and was purring, and circling around me, and wanting to be pet. So then I put on some music, and went onto the computer. She went on her scratch post--there's a little place where she can sit and scratch on the top... but she decided to lay there instead. So then she meowed for me to pet her, and I pet and pet and pet her until she fell asleep... and then, this morning, she eventually made it onto my bed, and slept there until Mom came in to administer the drops since I can't see where to put them and I don't wanna hurt her lol.. but they went in pretty easily because the first one she was barely awake, and the second one Mom just put in with her finger... so it was pretty easy.. the vet did show me how to wrap/hold her when Mom was putting in the drops, since she likes to wiggle a lot, but we didn't have to do that today... so anyways, just thought I'd share, Sara is getting back to herself yay!! :) Any tips as to what to do because my Mom anor I want her under the bed... cause that's where she likes to hide, so is there like a toy/house that I can get for her to maybe have her hide there instead? Yesterday also, she started to explore the upstairs on her own. and when I went to go clean the scoop for her litter last night, she meowed for me to come back, of which when I did, she was gonna like run out into the hallway. But I don't want her roming the house when I'm here by myself in case she gets into things... but when my Mom gets home, she'll observe with me and I'll let her run/explore all she wants. My friend is taking me to lunch, and she really wants to meet Sara, but from all that happend yesterday, I don't think I should? just cause of what happend and how she's not used to this person-and I probably won't see her for a long time since she lives in a different state then I do... but I don't know. so any tips ya'll have would be awesome! Thanks for reading. :) Amber

Hi Amber, a big welcome to you and Sara. I do hope her health issues get better quickly and she doesn't have to have the stress of getting medication for very long.

It sounds like Sara has adopted you and you have good instincts for keeping her safe.  It's a nice thought to bring something else in to the room for Sara to hide in - have you thought about maybe a cardboard box, maybe with a blanket or something soft with her smell on it inside?  Cat houses and things you buy can be really expensive and the kitten's often choose something you already have anyway and don't use the lovely present you've bought! Most cats love boxes, especially ones that are only just big enough for them to get inside and then curl up in.

It's lovely that your friend wants to meet your new arrival but you are right to be cautious. It probably depends on how well you think Sara is settling in today and what your friend is like. Is your friend likely to be sensitive to Sara's anxieties and be content to just see her under the bed from a distance then leave if Sara looks reluctant to come out, or will she try to crawl under the bed, try to play, and scare your new arrival again? If you think your friend would be sensitive and be happy just to have a quick look and then leave the room if Sara looked stressed then maybe it would be a nice thing to do.

What is Sara like? Is she a big or small cat?  Soft, fluffy tabby or sleek and muscly? What is her tail like?  Will you be able to post pictures for other people to see, or tell us a little more about what she's like as you get to know her better?  I hope she's a country music fan anyway! LOL  I like country too but it's not that big a thing here in the UK and doesn't get played a lot on radio and stuff so I'm pretty limited in what artists I know.

Mouse's servant.

Hey there! Thanks for your responce! The vet said that we should leave her carrior out(which is a cardboard box thing with wholes in it) so that she can get used to it... lol me too, I think she did like what I put on--Chris Young he's my favorite- don't know if you've heard of him or not, but he's pretty big in the US. My friend didn't wind up seeing the kittie, just in case. I didn't wanna scare her even more, ya know? lol... and since she won't be a frequent visitor, I didn't want Sara to be scared... when I came home, she came from right under the bed, and then I pet her and she went up on the scratch post thing, and she was sleeping. Since it's right right next to my computer desk, she meowed when she wanted me to pet her-she did this last night, too.. so I did.. then I sat at the edge of my chair, and I got up (to sit on the floor) but she thought I was gonna leave so she meowed again and I told her I wasn't leaving, and I pet her until she started cleaning herself, and then jumped off, cleaned herself some more and went under the bed, again, where she is now. she's been out a lot today to eat/drink/etc... so that's good. :) :D :) She is a blue-smoke tabby... I don't know if I'm correct in that discription. she's a small cat, like reallly small and thin. :)

Aw, a little blue smoke tabby sounds real cute. My first two cats were brown tabby girls. One was soft and fluffy though short furred and her coat was all spotted apart from her head, legs and tail. The other was a broken mackerel tabby and she was really sleek and lean until she got old - then she was kind of raggedy looking and cute, she was so frail you just had to love her.  They both went blind gradually when  they were older, the fluffy one because she developed tumours in her brain and eyes but never got sick with them till 3 days before I lost her, and the other because she had high blood pressure and I didn't know. They were both really amazing and did everything they always did but felt their way round with their whiskers! LOL.. My current boy, Mouse, is a Russian Blue: he's really fit looking with the softest most dense fur you could imagine. If you ever get to go to cat shows try and touch one if you haven't done before coz they're not like any other cat.

It sounds like your Sara's settling in really quickly with you and you're getting a lovely close bond already. That's so cute. It also sounds like she's learning real quick how to tell you what she wants. That sounds like a good clever cat !

Not heard of Chris Young so I'm going to Google in a minute and see if I can listen to something, or go on iTunes for a brows:)  Mostly I've just got bits of stuff that have been popular in the UK, like Dixie Chicks, and things I've heard through friends like Be Good Tanyas, Alison Krauss and Shelby Lynn. Pretty basic and I'd love to get to know more.  Mouse isn't a fan of music coz I didn't have a player when I first got him so he gets a bit freaked out, but he does seem to like this guy Gordon Lightfoot that I play sometimes. he's got a lovely relaxing tone to his voice.

Looking forward to hearing news as Sara gets up to some antics once she relaxes a bit more!

Hey there! Sara is now explooring more of the house now, she follows me around every where... (even when I'm in the bathroom lol!) everyday with her is a new adventure that's for sure! :) Awesome- let me know how you like Chris Young! :) Sara loves him, cause whenever I put him on, she always purs lol! :) :D she comes downstairs when there's people over, too now more and more... and when she hides under the bed now, I can get her out quite easily just by calling her or shaking her mouse (which I call mousie) :) lol that usually gets her to come out quick... she now claws at my feet when she wants her food lol.. when I'm re-filling the food bowl lol.. she doesn't eat much or drink much though. I'm considering changing her food, I'm gonna try a brand that I bought at the pet store the day I picked her up, so we'll see how that goes lol. Found some treats that she reallly likes.. (bought 3 different packages of 3 different brands of treats lol) and I found ones she really likes, too. :) :D :) Amber
