Persian cat and watering eyes - HELP!

I have two persian cats - one male 2 years old and a female 3 years old (bith de-sexed).

Jake my little boy has beautiful clean eyes.....never had any problems (touch wood) on the other hand Bagpuss....her eyes are constantly runny and they get dark bits around them. I am forever taking her to the vet and they say that there is nothing wrong with her - it is just that she has 3 eye lids and sometimes the tears get conjested and make her eyes water and the dark stuff is just dirt that stick onto her tears. Somtimes after cleaning herself she gets hair in her eyes and I am never sure how to get this out!

Do any of you Persian cat owners ever have the same problem???? and if so what do you do about it? I wash her face very gently with a soft wash cloth and luke warm water - which she hates having done but I am sure it makes her feel better afterwards. Are there any natural eye remedies I could buy for her???

Thanks for your help with this.

There's alot of info about this in this thread:

I don't know about getting a hair out of her eye... I would think it should come out by itself. Is that a Persian thing? None of my cats ever had such a problem.

Anne I am not sure if the hair in the eye is a Persian thing or just Bagpuss's thing but it is basically becauses she gets soooo into her cleaning and her fur is real long and a stray one gets in her eye - I just think it must hurt and annoy her.

Anne also thanks so much for the web site - you are succh a gem

Trichiasis is a condition of normal hairs lying on or irritating the globe. Examples of this would be very long facial hairs in long haired dogs/cats and nasal folds in the Pekingese. Also tiny hairs at the nose side of the eye can act as a wick and cause tear spilling in Miniature Poodles and Persian cats.

Hi.

We used to have Persians, and they always had that dark gookie stuff from their eyes. Our vet said that because their noses are shorter than other cats, that can cause issues with tear ducts. As long as the discharge is clear rather than cloudy, it's normal.

One of my cats didn't mind having his eyes cleaned but the other one didn't like my fingers in her face. I found that I could get them to relax by stroking their cheeks and noses, then I could dislodge the dried stuff with a single swipe in the same direction the fur grows. I also rubbed their noses at other times to get them used to being touched there. I didn't often need a wet washcloth, but it does help sometimes.

Good luck.

I would like to just point out that excessive watery eyes in a persian is NOT normal. The cats who have a serious problem have been bred with a disregard to it's health. If you do some looking and research you will find persians out there who have beautiful tear ducts. There are surgeries that can be performed to help, but the best way to help them is to keep them clean with a damp cloth and use artificial tears to keep the eyes free of debris.

Sandie is right - I have rescued Persians who were from kitten mills, overbred or pet store kittens that have had the most horrible eye problems - and I have seen beautiful, clear eyed Persians at shows - it isn't a Persian thing - it is the breeder who bred them. Check out different breeders and look at their lines (the parents, etc) before you buy.

If you say so, it must be so. I can only report what my vet said. Perhaps he meant it was normal for our particular cats? Or perhaps he was extrapolating from experiences with dogs? (I've known several dogs with discoloration around the eyes from discharge, though I've only owned one dog myself.) The vet actually knew the cats longer than I did. They were my husband's cats before I met him, so it was their usual vet. I have no idea where they came from since I was not part of purchasing them.

What is a kitten mill?
A kitten mill is a breeder who breeds cats for quantity and disregards any concern for health or quality. They try to produce kittens as fast as they can to make some money. It is very rare that reputable breeders could make a decent living.
As for the persians, yes some would say it's a trait, but only because it is such a popular breed and there are so many crummy breeders out there. I cant stress enough to people to stop buying pure bred kittens from pet stores and to find breeders close enough to inspect the cattery.

According to my book on Persian cats, it is quite normal for Persian cats to have eye problems becuase of how big and round their eyes are. Hopefully you brush and comb your Persian cats every day and at that same time, clean out the corners of their eyes. Persi's eyes are always matted in the morning and my book says this is normal for the breed. I just clean his eyes and recognize this is characteristic of the breed. But when I clean his eyes, his big blue eyes are beyond description! Frank Sinatra, eat your heart out...

For anybody else reading this - this is a thread from 2001, so the original poster is unlikely to need help still, and even less likely to still be around
