Hi people,
My 3 year old cat got spayed on Friday.
Since then she has not been eating and drinking like before.
Her appetite is getting better though, but I'm worried about her water intake.
She eats wet and dry both. (But very little after spaying)
She only drank water like 3 times after the surgery.
Should I be worried? The vet gave her some injected serum which he said was related to glucose in humans. (?)
I was thinking of giving her water thru the pipe that comes with her betamox palatable drops once.
Should I?

For now, only give her wet food, and maybe add a few spoonfuls of water to it as well. The vet usually gives IV fluids during surgery, and that may be why she hasn't been thirsty, but at this point that should have worn off. You can try boiling some chicken and giving her the broth (no salt or spices added). But if she's eating all wet food that should be enough moisture for her. You can also give her cooked meat--whatever her favorite is--to tempt her to eat more. She deserves some spoiling this week :D. If she stops eating entirely or her appetite doesn't improve after a few days, give the vet a call.

It can take a while after surgery for a kitty to get back to normal, especially if she's over a year old (it's much better to have them spayed while still young, so it's too bad her previous owners didn't have it done). But she'll be so much happier after she recovers! This way she won't have to be in heat all the time .

Thanks a lot. Yes shes 3. So i think she would take time to recover. I will try to increase water in her wet food. If not, i will try the syringe feeding method. Can't wait for her to get well soon. And one more thing, she hasn't passed any poop yet since friday. :(

Has she been eating? She may be constipated from the pain meds or anaesthetic. You can try adding canned pumpkin to her diet (not pie filling). It might be tough to find there but you could check out a grocery store that caters to expats. Here is a list of different treatments (http://www.felineconstipation.org/prevention.html). Many on these boards have had good luck with giving cats miralax (http://www.thecatsite.com/t/255767/miralax-dosing-and-response-time) I would call your vet though to make sure you are giving her the right dose and again I am not sure if the brand name miralax is available where you are, but I assume it would probably at least be found in an expat store.

Regardless you should call the vet and update them on her condition and get their advice on what may be going on. She may have to be brought in for an enema to clear her out.

How much is she eating? She may have been cleared out from fasting before the surgery, and it can take 3-4 days to get things moving again. If she's eating well, and it's mostly canned food with water added, and her tummy doesn't seem bloated or sore, I would give her another day or two before calling the vet. If she seems sore (like a tummyache sore, besides the "just had surgery" soreness) or is still not eating well, I'd call the vet now.

Yep, surgery messes up all your systems! Glad to hear she's getting back to normal. It usually takes about 10-14 days for her to be totally back to her old self.
