Born: September 1st, 2003

Death: August 10th, 2013

Age: 9 Years 11 Months and 10 Days

Outdoor Cat

Slightly Overweight

My cat Nemo was experiencing weird and unusual symptoms last night as listed:

- Thick Saliva, Foaming from mouth when fed water every 15-30 minutes.

- Sat still, didn't move for hours.

- Began breathing heavily, mouth open taking quick second large breaths.

- Vomiting excess amount of clear to yellowish liquid several times.

Previous Issues:

- Possible a Stroke, he was really sick for one day and was acting extremely awkward. He kept his head off slightly to the side for several months.

- Antifreeze Poisoning, we cured him and took care of him. He was fine and stable the day after.

He was fine the day before, very happy and very playful. The morning of his death, he was being awkward, very anti social and quiet but still able to move around the house. Around the afternoon/evening of the day he wasn't moving much. Began throwing up the clear to yellowish liquid and around late evening he would sit still and wouldn't move at all. Roughly an hour to two later feeding him water and getting him hydrated he began the heavy breathing but he also began drinking water on his own from his little bowl. His heavy breathing stopped but he still seemed ill and wouldn't move. Thick saliva was coming out of his mouth every time we would feed him water. The last time we took care of him by feeding him water was around 12:30AM. Come the next morning, 6:00AM he was found dead but warm. I'm guessing he died around 4-5AM that morning. I am really sad and I would really like to know what was wrong with him if anyone has any idea please feel free to post.

RIP Nemo

I'm so sorry for your loss.
It's really hard to say what happened to him, but it definitely sounds like he did at one point have a stroke, as you said, however, that probably wasn't what caused his death.

WHEN did he ingest the antifreeze?  The reason I ask is because that normally causes major kidney damage and I've never heard of a cat recovering in one day.  I'm wondering if this is really what took his life.  Usually animals who have ingested antifreeze end up in the hospital for many days and often never come home

Is it possible he got into anything else poisonous around the house, even MORE antifreeze?  That's really the only thing I can think of.

Again,  I am so sorry for your loss of little Nemo

There is no way any of us can know what happened to your cat. You could have the vet do a necropsy. I am sorry for your loss. You might consider posting a tribute in our Crossing the Bridge Forum where our members can offer their sympathies and support to you in this time of grief. I hope your memories will comfort you.
